Four members of the Strock family recently visited the Strock Stone House, a national historic landmark in Austintown. William Strock built the house in 1831 using sandstone from the South Turner Road Stony Ridge sandstone quarry. In the foreground are Ward and Bertha Strock, who visited the house with their son Mark and his wife, Elizabeth, from Colorado. For tour information call 330-799-8051.

The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown recently announced its officers and directors for 2013-2014. The Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown recently presented a $1,000 scholarship to Autumn Dixon at the Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park. Dixon, a resident of Austintown and graduate of Austintown Fitch, is attending a Kent State University branch, where she is studying horticulture. She hopes to own and operate a garden center. The Youngstown Police Department sponsored its 22nd annual Memorial Golf Outing recently  at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard. The event was in memory of those officers who lost their lives to cancer between 2009 and 2011. They are Capt. Robert Kane, Capt. Kenneth Centorame, Detective Sgt. Jerry Maietta and Detective Sgt. Joseph DeMatteo. The proceeds this year will provide Youngstown State University scholarships to Alexander Barber, son of Detective Sgt. Ronald Barber; Christopher Kenney, son of Officer Ed Kenney; Marc Ruse, son of Officer Ken Ruse; and Travis Williams, son of Clerk Lori Williams. Outing committee members, above, from left are Fred LoSasso, Debbie DeMatteo, Laura Brown, Vickie Maietta, Carlotta Kane and Sue Centorame. Also on the committee are Detective Sgt. Jim Whetstone, left, owner of Toyota of Warren, recently presented a check for $75,488.64 to Deryck Toles, executive director of Inspiring Minds. The proceeds were earned at the second annual Celebrity Golf Outing in June at Avalon Lakes in Warren. Toles founded Inspiring Minds seven years ago to inspire and empower young people to overcome obstacles in their lives. More than 200 have enrolled in its summer enrichment program.
