Richard Scarsella, president of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, discussed the importance of honoring McGuffey, a Mahoning Valley native and pioneer in  education, decades after his death. A stretch of Interstate 680 was recently named the William Holmes McGuffey Memorial Highway, thanks to the historical society and state legislators.

Confederate soldiers march to battle during a past Civil War reenactment at Argus Park in Canfield. Greg Anstrom, of Argus Lodge, said this reenactment is one of the largest in this area and will bring between 350 and 400 people in to take part as soldiers for the North and South. The event runs Saturday and Sunday at Argus Park off Shields Road, and gates open at 10 a.m..

Youngstown Rotary Club met July 10 for a formal dinner and an installation ceremony at Youngstown Country Club. Heartwarming gifts: Mended Hearts, Chapter 7, a support group for heart survivors and their families, sells nuts for the holidays each year to raise funds for scholarships for nursing/medical students at Youngstown State University and at St. Elizabeth Health Center/Mercy College. During a recent Humility of Mary Health Partners Development Foundation Awards Luncheon $1,000 scholarships were presented to two Mercy College students. Shown after the presentation are, from left, Joe Clark, chapter president; Patricia Feindt, scholarship chairwoman; and the scholarship recipients, Danielle Clonch and Amanda Niehorster. The chapter also makes contributions to the endowment fund of Camp Mountain Heart, a cardiac camp in Ripley, W.Va., for children who are heart patients.

Browsing for bargains: Customers at the annual Upton Garage Sale, in downtown Warren, browse through the goods. The Upton Association and the Trumbull County Historical Society are sponsoring the sale, which is open to the public. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tools, toys, furniture, antiques and household items are always available at the sales. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon today and from 2-5 p.m. Thursday.
