Local Federated Women’s Clubs recently participated in Legislation Day at Tippecanoe Country Club. Guest speakers for the event included State Representative Michele Lepore-Hagan, Ohio 58th District, and Victoria Rusu-Ebert of Operation Smile. Awards were presented by district chairwomen to clubs based on their community-service programs conducted throughout 2016. The event was hosted by the Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs for the Northeast District of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Ohio. Participating clubs were the Warren City Federation, Masury Brookfield Women’s Club, Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s Club, Canfield Junior Women’s League, Austintown Junior Women’s League, Louisville Women’s League and the GFWC Ohio Warren Junior Women’s League. The Columbiana Women’s Club will host “Dishin’ Dirt,” a lunch and learn symposium with garden design experts, at The Gardens at Hippley Village, 547 N. Main St. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. Featured presenter will be Keith Kaiser, horticulture consultant, who will create a garden container to be auctioned at the event. The cost is $25. A box lunch will be served under a tent. Reservations may be made by calling the Women’s Club at 330-482-2832, or Donna Bekar at 330-482-2267. SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
The Berlin-Ellsworth Ruritan club recently honored 23 Western Reserve High School seniors for their outstanding academic achievements. The Academic Banquet, held at A La Carte catering in Canfield, honored seniors achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Seven underclassmen were also honored for their 4.0 grade point average. Each senior invited a special guest to speak on their behalf as part of the evening’s festivities. The evening was celebrated with members of the Western Reserve administration, board of education, Berlin-Ellsworth Ruritan and family members attending. Argus Lodge in Canfield honored Robert C. Evans with his 60-year membership certificate and lapel pin. RWB James Cardelein and WB Charles Prachik presented the awards to Evans. He was born in Youngstown and served in the United States Army in the Infantry from 1948 to 1953. After an apprenticeship in plumbing, he worked as a plumber for Scholl-Choffin Plumbing and Heating until he purchased the business in 1970 and ran it until he retired in 1995. He lives in Canfield with Almedah, his wife of 61 years. They have two daughters and five grandchildren. Above from left; Cardelein, Evans and Prachik.
