Police dogs are trained to assist police and law-enforcement personnel in finding suspects through smell, protecting its handler, finding hidden objects, knowing how to respond when under fire and detecting explosives and narcotics. Nine-year-old Tron will retire in March 2017 due to physical problems. He served seven years. A new dog will be purchased in April and training costs approximately $14,000. The Newcomers donated to the fund and Debarr thanked the club for its support. To contribute to the Canfield Police Canine Fund, call the department at 330-533-4903. Newcomers is a social club to help those who are new to the community to make new friends. They participate in community activities and raise funds to help non-profit organizations.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9571 of Ellsworth became an All-State Post on June 11 at the VFW Department of Ohio Convention that took place in Independence, Ohio. This is its first All-State distinction since its inception in 1947. Post Commander Jim Tornincasa Jr. and Post Quartermaster Ray Schafer each received a white VFW hat to signify the honor. To receive the distinction, the post had to complete several requirements between July 1, 2015, and April 30. At left are Tornincasa; John Craig, adjutant; and Schafer.

Three members of Girl Scout Troop 80777 of Columbiana are working to earn their bronze award. The bronze award is the first of three high level awards to reach the gold award. Girl Scouts participate in projects that leave a lasting impression on the community to earn the awards. These scouts are researching Fairfield Township history and are helping create signage for the new Headwaters Nature Trail that Fairfield Township trustees are creating on township property. Donations toward the project are welcome and may be made by calling Crystal Siembida Boggs, troop leader, at 330-482-9105, or Barry Miner with Fairfield Township. Above are Easter Seals preschoolers with their adult supervisors. The preschoolers, who are moving on to kindergarten, participated in a graduation ceremony June 17 where they received awards and certificates and shared refreshments with their guests. Some graduates have been with the school from the age of 6 weeks. They participate in physical, occupational or speech therapies. Each child grows and works toward its potential goals set by his or her parents, teachers and therapists.

Anthony D’Apolito, above, Juvenile Justice Center court administrator and magistrate, shared the function and successes of the center at a recent meeting of Canfield Rotary. He praised the results that have been achieved since the creation of the Juvenile Drug Court in 2001 by Judge Theresa Dellick, as well as other programs she has introduced. D’Apolito will be traveling to Washington D.C. with Judge Dellick, where she will be honored for her work with juveniles.
