SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR A group of students at Poland Union Elementary School raised $600 in their Give Back program to benefit Beatitude House. Students took change to school, and over several weeks they surpassed the goal of $400. Beatitude House helps disadvantaged women and children in Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties. The fundraiser gathered more than 400 local and regional business partners, community advocates and friends of Inspiring Minds, who showed their support for the organization’s new chapter. More than $150,000 was raised. The event featured dinner and dancing, auctions, a keynote address by Jim Tressel, and guest appearances by Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Bo Pelini and Maurice Clarett. During the Springtime in Columbiana event May 1 and 2, the birdhouses were on display, and visitors voted for their favorites. In the 10 and under division, Canna Holmes, above, won for her “Cute as a Button” house. Kim Bland, below, received the most votes for her “Relay for Life” themed house in the 18 and older division. The winners received $25.

Participating in the event were 90 runners. Above left, overall winners were Tom Grantonic of Boardman, first place; Ed Brainard of Canfield, second; and Larry Bovo of Struthers, third. Women’s overall winners, below top, were Alyssa Lynch of Austintown, first place; Alyssa Wirtz of Canfield, second; and Shannon Dudash of Poland, third. A kids run also took place, and Kylie Morgan, 7, of Alliance, below middle, took the winning spot. The Youngstown Road Runners Club provided the finish line. The top-three finishers in the ladies masters race are at the bottom. Finishing first was Renay Choma, second place went to Renee Boden, and third went to Susan Sarachene.
