The Shutrump Fifth Annual Memorial Mass took place Nov. 3 at the Ursuline Motherhouse in Canfield to honor living and deceased members of the family. This year the Mass also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Motherhouse, which Fred Shutrump constructed. Members of his family as well as the families of John Shutrump, Fred’s brother, and George Shutrump, his cousin, also attended the Mass and brunch.

The Columbiana Women’s Club will host its annual Holiday Brunch and House Tour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7. Five houses will participate: the CWC Clubhouse at 121 N. Main St.; Vivian Mahon’s home at 116 N. Vine St.; Jason and Leah Wilson’s rustic log cabin home at 973 Fairfield Ave.; Jay and Rita Espenshade’s working-farm home at 5584 Knopp Road, Salem; and Kelly Hillman’s home at 41086 Bonesville School Road, Leetonia. Tickets, which cost $15, are available at Vivian’s Antiques, 24 S. Main St., and the Next-to-New Shop, 121 N. Main, before the event and at each house the days of the tour. During tour times, maps will be available at all the sites. Above, Wilson and her children eagerly await the holiday season and the visitors who will see their decorated home.

Members of the board of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and of the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown planted two Princeton variety elm trees earlier this month at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown. The trees, donated by Dellaquadri Landscaping, are the first two the garden club is planting to reintroduce the species. Dutch elm disease is responsible for the demise of the uniquely American tree. William E. Johnson, dressed as the Colonial patriot John Hancock, stands between retired Lt. Col. Rod Hosler of Boardman, left, and retired Maj. Peter Mihai of Youngstown. At a recent meeting of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, Johnson was the guest speaker. He offered a glimpse of colonial history in Hancock’s persona. An actor in the stage play “1776,” Johnson also has written two fictional historical books about colonial days: “Snug Harbor Tavern” and “Seeds of Love — and War.” A former Navy aviator, Johnson lives in Youngstown and gives seminars nationwide. The next MSVC-MOAA meeting will take place jointly with the Mahoning Valley Chapter of the Reserve Officers Association Dec.8 at the Manor Restaurant, at the corner of state Route 46 and Kirk Road in Austintown.
