BROOKFIELD

Junior quarterback Isaac Allegretto was 15 of 21 for 313 yards and Trent Harrold rushed 13 times for 133 yards as South Range averted what could have been a disastrous start to the third quarter to beat Brookfield, 42-19.

Allegretto ran for two touchdowns and passed to Jacob Gehring, Harrold and Trey Pancake for three other touchdowns for the Raiders (3-2).

With South Range ahead by only eight at the start of the second half, Brookfield recovered its onside kick, but failed to convert following a turnover.

It could have been trouble when Brookfield, unexpectedly, got possession.

“Our kids did face a lot of adversity tonight [by losing Brookfield’s onside kick to start the third quarter],” South Range coach Dan Yeagley said. “Kids will deal with it in different ways, but that’s when our kids pulled together. We talked about getting the advantage in the second half and then we got the ball back on a turnover later in that drive and went down and scored. This was one physical ballgame. Coach Clark gets his kids ready to play and it’s a very, very physical ballgame.”

Brookfield lost two fumbles in the third quarter to kill drives.

Also, because the Raiders had more bodies, they were able to keep players somewhat fresh, especially in the third and fourth quarters when the visitors had to help tackle Tyler Briggs, who finished with 152 yards on 24 carries as the Warriors’ workhorse.

“Our numbers helped a lot, especially in the second half,” Yeagley said.

Brookfield coach Randy Clark started the game with 24 players — half of South Range’s sideline patrol.

“We’ve got a lot of kids hurt and a lot injured,” said Clark, who started the game with 24 players dressed after having 40 at the season’s outset.

“Those two fumbles [in the third quarter] hurt, but I’m proud of the way our kids fought back.”

Brookfield’s touchdowns came from Dakota King’s 31-yard TD pass to Stephen Hayes and a 24-yard TD run by Hayes. Briggs also tallied from seven yards out. Briggs gained 152 yards on 24 carries for the Warriors (1-4).

South Range’s top receivers were Gehring with five catches for 88 yards and Ryan Davenport with two receptions for 49 yards.
