Eagles shut down Blue Devils for first win

With 16 seconds to play and the Lisbon football team down 14-12, Blue Devils quarterback Logan Bell dropped back for a fourth-down pass. But his throw skipped to his receiver and Valley Christian walked away with its first win of the season.
But it wasn’t just the first win of the season for the Eagles. It was also the first win under co-head coaches Jeff Hether and Jomont Ware.
Valley Christian (1-2) recovered a fumble with 8:20 left in the first quarter. The turnover gave Valley Christian a short field, and Eagles’ running back Altwjuan Beck-Lindsey scored two plays later by breaking a 37-yard touchdown run.
After a Lisbon turnover on downs, the Eagles scored their second touchdown of the game on a 39-yard pass from quarterback Milan Square to receiver Jamynk Jackson.
Square finished the game 6 of 17 for 61 yards while throwing a touchdown and an interception.
Hether said Square didn’t have a perfect night, but he is starting to become comfortable after the first two games and expects more improvement as the season progresses.
“He’s finally starting to see the field, finally starting to see guys open he should have saw in the last two games,” Hether said. “Now he’s seeing them and now he’s picking them apart.”
Lisbon (2-1) got on the board in the final minutes of the first quarter. Bell completed an 82-yard pass to receiver Seth Stokes to cut the lead to 14-6.
The Blue Devils had a chance to tie after a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Camron Summers with 8:58 remaining in the game. But Lisbon failed to convert the two-point attempt.
Lisbon stopped Valley Christian on fourth down and recovered a fumble on the next two possessions. The Blue Devils were unable to capitalize despite starting both drives inside the Eagles’ 30. Valley Christian linebacker Jamar Nuby forced turnovers on both possessions, the first on an interception and the next on a fumble recovery.
“We tried to get some rhythm but we couldn’t get anything going,” Lisbon head coach Jim Tsilimos said. “We knew they had a good, aggressive defense and they did some things that caused us some issues.”
Tsilimos said Valley Christian’s defensive line was one reason the Blue Devils couldn’t consistently move the ball. The Eagles had two sacks and held Lisbon to 91 yards rushing.
Ware said the Eagles’ defense is full of strong, athletic players who can cause problems for opposing offenses. He said the defense has played well in the first two games of the season and he kept telling his players to stay consistent and the team will get its first win.
“Campbell, we were knocking on the door down 13-7. We were at the 10-yard line and we had the ball knocked away — we could have won that game. Gilmour was 0-0 midway through the third quarter,” Ware said. “We had chances and we had chances and finally we knocked the door down. We just needed one win to build a little confidence.”
