Harding, JFK second in state football poll

Staff report

Warren’s unbeaten high school football teams moved up in their respective divisions in the second weekly Associated Press high school football poll.

And Warren Harding and Warren JFK have company from the Mahoning Valley in the top 10 in other divisions.

The Raiders (4-0) — fresh off a 35-0 road victory over Division I Austintown Fitch — were second in Division II in the latest poll, released on Monday.

The Eagles (4-0) are second in Division VII after their own convincing Week 4 road win, a 34-0 rout of Crestview.

Warren Harding received four first-place votes and 180 points in Division II. Avon (4-0) leads the divison with 13 first-place votes and 214 points.

The Raiders are scheduled to host Ursuline (2-2) on Friday at Warren’s Mollenkopf Stadium. It will be the second consecutive game there for the Irish, who played a home game against Massillon there on Saturday and lost, 30-0.

Warren Harding has outscored its four opponents 151-34 behind senior quarterback Lynn Bowden.

The Eagles also picked up four first-place votes in Division VII, where their 198 points left them trailing division-leading Mogadore (4-0, 224 points). The Wildcats received 17 first-place votes.

Warren JFK is scheduled to host Steubenville Catholic Central (1-3) on Saturday in another matchup at Mollenkopf Stadium.

The Eagles have allowed just seven points in their four games.

Cardinal Mooney (3-1) was the only other Mahoning Valley team to crack the top 10 in any of Ohio’s seven divisions in this week’s poll.

The Cardinals checked in at No. 10 in Division IV after a 31-16 victory over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary at Youngstown State’s Stambaugh Stadium on Friday night.

Cardinal Mooney will visit Mentor Lake Catholic (2-2) on Saturday.

Hubbard (4-0) also earned a mention in the Division IV balloting, coming in at No. 13 (24 points). The unbeaten Eagles had one first-place vote. They have outscored their four foes 147-39 after a 47-10 rout of Lakeview in Week 4.

Hubbard visits Howland (2-2) on Friday in an All-American Conference interdivisional matchup. The Eagles are in the AAC’s White Tier and the Tigers — fresh off a stunning 35-34 win over Poland — are in the Red Tier.

South Range (4-0) was the only other area team to earn a mention in this week’s poll. The unbeaten Raiders were 13th (18 points) in Division V and received one first-place vote.

South Range visits unbeaten Lisbon (4-0) on Friday in a key interdivisional Inter-Tri County League. The Raiders are in the ITCL’s Red Tier and the Blue Devils are in its White Tier.

South Range beat Mineral Ridge 51-0 last week. Lisbon won on the road at East Palestine 49-26.
