POLAND

Unfortunately for the Poland High School football team, time flew in Friday’s 17-7 loss to Hubbard.

In a game that lasted just a shade less than two hours, the Eagles (7-2, 4-1 All-American Conference White) dominated, outrushing the Bulldogs, 260 to 17.

“Our plan was definitely to run the ball, absolutely,” Hubbard coach Brian Hoffman said.

“This is a big win for us tonight. It gives us a share of the conference title, and we’re hoping it can lead to a playoff run.”

Hubbard running back Rafael Morales had 28 carries for 151 yards. Tyreq Moorer also had a big night with 80 yards on seven carries with a touchdown. One of his runs covered 52 yards.

Davion Daniels gained 26 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown to seal the game with 2:03 left.

“That’s their gameplan,” Poland head coach Ryan Williams. “They control the ball, play great defense.

“They’re a big, physical team,” Williams said. “They like to run the ball, and play keepaway a little bit. It’s tough to beat a team that can do all that.”

The success in the run game allowed Hubbard to dominate time of possession.

“We relied heavily on our run game this year, and the way that our running backs play,” Hoffman said. “Our offensive line did very well tonight.

“We played very good defense, so holding the ball is a by-product of this recipe.”

For Poland, the offense never got going. Reid Gould was the leading rusher with 14 yards on six carries and the Bulldogs’ touchdown.

Poland amassed six first downs, including two in the last minute when the game was out of reach.

Poland’s defense kept the Bulldogs in the game. Hubbard’s first trip into the red zone ended with a 35-yard field goal made by Anthony Corrin.

Their second trip ended with zero points after a fumble on Poland’s 2-yard line pushed them back to the 18. Corrin then missed the 35-yard field goal attempt.

Williams was pleased with his defense.

“We kept a very good football team in check for most of the game,” Williams said. “We just need a couple of first downs to help our defense tonight.”

Trailing 3-0, Poland’s only scoring drive came on the opening drive of the second half when the Bulldogs earned their first first down.

“We just added a few tweaks to the offense,” Williams said of thehalftime adjustment. “We changed a couple schemes, made a couple adjustments, and the kids came out and executed.”

About trailing, Hoffman said, “you’re never happy giving up the lead. But hey, it’s part of the game. I like the way our kids responded.”

Hubbard regained the lead on Dillon O’Hara’s 5-yard touchdown run.

“Poland’s defense really showed up,” Hoffman said. “I’m not going to lie; we were very frustrated with our red-zone performance. We didn’t capitalize.

“We were on the 1-yard line and fumbled,” Hoffman said.

Poland quarterback Jonah Spencer completed eight of 13 pass attempts for 66 yards.
