Three Warren JFK named to All-Ohio first team
Staff report
Warren JFK’s brilliant 2016 brought home some individual honors on Thursday, but there could be bigger and better things ahead for the Eagles.
Three Warren JFK players — offensive lineman Bruce Johnson, running back Evan Boyd and kicker Justin Bofenkamp — were named to The Associated Press Division VII All-Ohio first team. All are senior stalwarts for Eagles coach Jeff Bayuk’s team, which is not quite finished playing the 2016 season.
Warren JFK (13-1) will meet Minster (10-4) in the Division VII state championship game at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. The Eagles are the area’s only high school football team that has yet to pack away its helmets and pads.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Johnson helped pave the way for the 5-11, 185-pound Boyd and the Eagles’ offense all season. Boyd — a 1,000-yard rusher — recently was named the All-Northeast Inland District Offensive Player of the Year in Division VII, but he has also been a big part of Warren JFK’s defense, scoring touchdowns on defense in each of the Eagles’ last two playoff games.
Warren JFK has allowed an average of fewer than six points per game during its playoff run.
The 6-2, 170-pound Bofenkamp gives the Eagles yet another weapon in the kicking game.
Warren JFK’s Ryan Lee and Alec Burzynski were special-mention selections. Sebring running back Nate Martin, another 1,000-yard rusher, was a third-team All-Ohio selection.
Jackson-Milton’s Noah Laster and Nick Scarl and Wellsville’s Justin Miller and Michael Shope also were special-mention picks.
