Five area prep football teams have clinched playoff berths
Staff report
Two area high school football teams already have clinched first-round home games in the playoffs, three others are assured of postseason berths and eight more control their own destiny entering the final week of the regular season.
Crestview (8-1) and Warren JFK (8-1) are assured of hosting first-round playoff games no matter what happens in their games Friday night, according to the projections of Ohio high school football playoff guru Joe Eitel and posted on his website.
The latest Ohio High School Athletic Association computer ratings were released Tuesday.
Crestview tops Division V, Region 15. The Rebels visit Lisbon on Friday. Grand Valley (8-1) is fourth in Region 15 and has clinched a playoff berth. The Mustangs’ game against Newbury has been canceled Friday.
Warren JFK leads Division VII, Region 23. The Eagles visit Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday.
Poland (9-0) — the area’s lone unbeaten team — hosts Canfield on Friday. The Bulldogs are assured of a playoff berth in Division III, Region 7, in which they’re currently second.
Columbiana (8-1) has clinched a playoff berth in Division VI, Region 19. The Clippers are currently third in the region and will host Leetonia on Friday night.
Austintown Fitch (6-3), the area’s lone Division I, Region 1 team, is among the locals who can clinch a playoff spot with a victory, according to projections compiled by Eitel.
The Falcons are 13th in their region and the top 16 Division I teams qualify. Fitch visits Cardinal Mooney on Friday night.
Division IV teams Ursuline (5-4), Salem (8-1) and West Branch (7-2) control their destinies. The same holds true in Division V for LaBrae (7-2) and East Palestine (6-3).
Division VI Lisbon (8-1) and Division VII Mathews (6-2) also can secure playoff berths by winning Friday.
Sixteen other teams are still mathematically alive for the postseason, but most likely each needs to win its regular-season finale and get help to qualify in their regions.
Those teams include:
Division II: Boardman (5-4) and Warren Harding (6-3).
Division III: Canfield (7-2) and Howland (6-3).
Division IV: Lakeview (6-3), Cardinal Mooney (4-4), Jefferson (6-3), Hubbard (5-4), Struthers (5-4).
Division V: South Range (6-3).
Division VI: Western Reserve (7-2), McDonald (6-3) and Brookfield (8-1).
Division VII: Jackson-Milton (6-3), Windham (6-3) and Wellsville (4-5).
