Niles holds off West Branch; Girard nips JFK

The Niles High football team jumped out to a 19-point halftime lead then held on to win, 37-34, Friday at Clinton Heacock Stadium. Zach Atkins’ 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was the margin of difference.
Quarterback Corey Hayes completed 8-of-17 passes for 248 yards, including touchdown passes to Leonard Bryant covering 28 and 84 yards for Niles (1-2). Bryant caught four passes for 172 yards. Hayes also rushed 24 times for 98 yards and returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown.
Kip DeShields caught 13 passes for 200 yards, setting a West Branch record for receptions in a game. Four went for touchdowns covering 27, 55, 7 and 9 yards. Quarterback Corey Snyder completed 21 of 45 attempts for 281 yards. He also ran 16 times for 94 yards for the Warriors (1-2).
Girard 21, Warren JFK 20
GIRARD
Christian Bello threw two touchdown passes, one to Jake Ryser. Ryser also ran for a score as the Indians (2-1) held off the Eagles (0-3). Bello threw TD passes of 19 yards to Ryser and 24 yards to Collin Cramer and Ryser ran for a 1-yard TD for Girard.
The Indians overcame two big plays by Warren JFK’s Jacob Coates, who returned a punt 76 yards for a score and caught a 62-yard TD pass from Michael Roscoe.
Roscoe scored the first TD of the game on an 8-yard run, then Coates followed with his punt return.
McDonald 35, Cuyahoga Hts. 3
MCDONALD
Jake Reckard had 106 yards and three touchdowns to led the McDonald Blue Devils to a 3-0 start. Caleb Dimery added 140 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Blue Devils. The defense held the Redskins to 263 yards of total offense. The Blue Devils had 340 yards of offense.
Dover 21, Canfield 18
DOVER
The Cardinals stormed back with 15 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. The Cardinals (1-2) had 301 yards on the ground led by Aaron Jenkins who had 162 yards on 32 carries. Drew Rodgers added 92 yards on 12 rushes. Jenkins had a passing touchdown as well with 2:42 left.
Mineral Ridge 33, Newton Falls 16

Nick Ferguson ran for 158 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Rams blew open a lead that was 19-16 after three quarters. Mac White passed for two touchdowns and 129 yards for Ridge (1-2).
Newton Falls (1-2) got two receiving touchdowns and 143 yards on five catches from Brad Mitchell.
Mogadore Field 17, Struthers 6
MOGADORE
Luke Witkowski returned to action for Struthers and scored on a 10-yard run late in the first quarter but the Wildcats (1-2) went scoreless the rest of the way.
Witkowski, back from a two-game OHSAA suspension, rushed for 57 yards. AJ Musolino added 49 yards on the ground and 99 yards passing.
Jackson-Milton 18, Windham 14
NORTH JACKSON
Mike Assion scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and had 89 rushing yards and 79 through the air for the Bluejays (3-0).
Jackson-Milton trailed 8-0 at halftime before Adam Smith got them on the board with a 26-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Assion then put the Jays ahead 12-8 with a six-yard scoring run in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
After Windham regained the lead, 14-12, midway through the quarter, Assion scored from 10 yards out with 4:34 remaining.
Joey Burnside added 72 yards on the ground for J-M.
Brookfield 42, Campbell 0

Brookfield opened a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to its rout of the Red Devils (1-2).
Augustus Necastro passed for 213 yards for the Warriors (2-1) including two touchdowns to Kasey Tingler who finished with three catches for 107 yards.
Nate Morrison added 84 yards on the ground and the Brookfield defense held Campbell to 61 yards of offense.
Salem 39, East Liverpool 7

Quakers quarterback Matt Weingart passed for 280 yards including touchdown passes to Jake Humeniuk (63 yards) and Blake Hochadel (13).
Humenick caught three passes for 122 yards and Hochadel five for 60. Trace Jenkins’ two receptions covered 77 yards.
Salem (2-1) also rushed for 274 yards, with Cooper Bezeredi leading with 172 yards on 14 carries. His touchdowns covered 10, 76 and 13 yards.
For the Potters (0-3), Dillan Reynolds rushed 19 times for 65 yards. Kade Reynolds scored the touchdown on a 1-yard run.
United 38, Newcomerstown 16
HANOVERTON
The Eagles (3-0) rushed for 333 yards in the romp. Colton Antram gained 176 yards on 22 carries, scoring touchdowns of 1, 5 and 11 yards. Caige Vincent rushed for 115 yards on 22 carries and scored on 18-and 1-yard runs. Nick Varagliotti kicked a 26-yard field goal and five conversion points.
Beaver Local 31, East Palestine 20
LISBON
Robert Johnston gained 287 yards on 38 carries for the Beavers (2-1). He scored touchdowns covering 17, 5, 10 and 56 yards. Trevore McLaughlin passed for 111 yards.
For the Bulldogs (0-3), Luke Cope completed 10 of 21 passes for 158 yards including touchdown passes to Nick Monteleone (47 yards) and Jarrod Figley (26).
Garfield 27, Champion 10
CHAMPION
Trailing 10-7 late in the fourth quarter, Garfield scored three touchdowns in a span of 46 seconds, including a pick-six, to run away from Champion.
Tyler Croasman caught a eight-yard touchdown pass from Nate Emens with 3:12 remaining to give the G-Men (2-1) the lead. Thirty-one seconds later, Will DuVall ran it in from six-yards out. Then, Anthony DeNigris capped the comeback with a 42-yard interception returned for a touchdown.
LaBrae 49, Pymatuning Valley 0
ANDOVER
Keevon Harris for two touchdown passes and caught a scoring pass as the Vikings overwhelmed the Lakers in a non-conference matchup. It was 42-0 at halftime.
Harris ran for TDs of 9 and 41 yards and caught a 14-yard pass from quarterback Justin Jenkins.
Jenkins also threw TD passes of 1 yard to Tariq Drake and 10 yards to J.T. Wolke. The Vikings (3-0) also got TD runs of 2 and 1 yard from Chris Mathews.
Jenkins was 8 of 13 for 127 yards and he also ran for 69 yards on 10 carries. Harris ran for 64 yards on seven carries and Mathews added 43 on 13 attempts. Drake caught four passes for 56 yards and Harris had three receptions for 61 yards.
LaBrae held PV (1-2) to just 64 total yards.
Lisbon 13, Wellsville 0
LISBON
Jason Thompson had 87 yards on nine carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run for Lisbon over Wellsville. Austin Davis added 19 yards and a score for the Blue Devils (3-0). All 13 points were scored in the second quarter. The Tigers (2-1) were shutout for the first time this season.
Mathews 39, Newbury 14

Mathews scored 21 straight points in the second half, opening up a 12-7 halftime lead in the Mustangs’ initial Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
Brian Leipply, who rushed for 136 yards, scored midway through the third quarter, Robbie Helmick caught a 41-yard pass from Cobie Pratt and Daniel Canter scored from 5 yards out early in the fourth to pull away from Newbury (1-2, 0-2).
Pratt added 106 yards on the ground for the Mustangs (2-1, 1-0 NAC).
Ledgemont 9, Southington 7

Southington was done in by a fourth-quarter safety in the first Northeastern Athletic Conference contest for each team.
The Wildcats (0-3) tied the game 7-7 late in the third quarter when Cameron Mazzola returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown.
The safety came with 11:41 remaining in the game and Ledgemont (1-1) kept Southington off the board the rest of the way.
