Wassil produces two big plays as Hubbard rolls over Girard

Ethan Wassil isn’t the first name you think of when the subject is Hubbard football.
But he shouldn’t be the last.
Wassil had a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown and ran for a score to spark the Eagles to a 56-13 victory over Girard on Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
“I was just reading my keys,” Wassil said. “The coaches tell me to play pass first. Running to the end zone is probably the greatest feeling in the world.”
The interception came right after a Cam Ingram touchdown run put the Eagles up 21-0. Girard had the ball at its 35 when quarterback Christian Bello threw a pass and Wassil jumped in front of the intended receiver and took it all the way for a 28-0 lead.
Wassil says he was prepared for the route.
“They were prone to be running that slant-and-go,” Wassil said. “We had to watch that.”
The Eagles scored 35 points in the second quarter to push the lead to 49-0 at halftime.
“We played solid defense tonight,” Hubbard coach Brian Hoffman said. “It was a good team effort.”
The Eagles held the Indians to just 120 yards of offense, most of which came in the fourth quarter.
“We improved from a week ago,” Hoffman said. “I feel like we tweaked some things offensively, [including] getting our playmakers the ball.”
Hubbard scored early and often in the first half. The Eagles drove 80 yards in 13 plays on their first possession. George Hill capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
After a defensive stop, Hubbard marched down the field again.
This time it was Wassil with a 5-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.
Hubbard’s Larry Scott had 169 yards and two scores on 18 carries. Hill finished with 152 yards on just eight carries.
Isiah Scott added 58 yards and two scores as Hubbard rolled up 497 yards of offense.
“We are just taking it game by game,” said Larry Scott, who didn’t play much in the second half. “We expect to do great thing this year.”
Girard showed some life with two second-half touchdowns. Bello accounted for both for the Indians.
Despite the outcome, Girard head coach Pat Pearson was happy with his team in the second half.
“I told them to go out and finish like a Girard football player, with heart and pride,” Pearson said. “I was happy with how the guys finished the game.”
