Hubbard remains No. 1 in AP poll

Staff report

The undefeated Hubbard High football team solidified its hold on the top spot in Division III in the latest Associated Press poll.

The Eagles picked up 18 of 26 first-place votes — two more than last week — in finishing on top for the fourth straight week.

If Hubbard defeats its final three opponents (Howland, Canal Fulton Northwest and Struthers), it will likely finish with its first AP crown in school history.

Ursuline (2010, Division V) was the last Valley team to win an AP poll title, which is awarded after Week 10.

Last Friday, the Eagles rolled past Canfield, 40-10 and are in first place in the Region 7 computer playoff ratings.

Aurora (7-0), which is also in Region 7, is third in this week’s state poll voted on by sportswriters and broadcasters from across Ohio.

Several other Mahoning Valley teams made the top 10 in their divisions.

In Div. VII, Western Reserve (6-1) is ranked sixth.

In Div. IV, Cardinal Mooney (4-2) is 10th after a weekend off. Ursuline (5-2) is ninth in Division V after last Friday’s 23-14 win over Massillon. Mooney and Ursuline face off on Oct. 24.

In Div. VI, McDonald (7-0) is seventh.

In Div. I, Austintown Fitch (6-1) just missed the Top 10.
