Valley players among best in Inland district

Six Mahoning Valley football players were named players of the year on the Associated Press All-Northeast Inland District Teams, which were announced Thursday.
Two of those players — Hubbard’s Larry Scott and Ursuline’s Tyler Leonard — and their teams are still alive in the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs.
Scott was named the Offensive Player of the Year in Division III. Scott and the Eagles (12-0) will meet Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in a regional final tonight at Ravenna’s Gilcrest Field.
Leonoard was named the Defensive Player of the Year in Division V. Leonard and the Irish (8-4) will face Canton Central Catholic in a reginal final Saturday night at Lake Blue Streak Stadium in Hartville.
Other top award winners in the district included Fitch’s Tyler Hewlett (Division I Defensive Player of the Year), Cardinal Mooney’s Jordan Jones (Division IV Defensive Player of the Year), Liberty’s Lynn Bowden (Division V Offensive Player of the Year) and South Range’s Joe Alessi (Division VI Offensive Player of the Year).
Mathews coach Mike Palumbo was named the Coach of the Year in Division VII.
