Mapleton rolls over Wellsville

Ashland Mapleton High School made history on Saturday night.
The Mounties beat the Wellsville Tigers, 39-7, in a Division VII, Region 23 first-round game for the first playoff victory in school history.
The Tigers were down just 7-0 after one quarter, but the Mounties took control with in the second period as Wade Barone threw three touchdown passes to give Mapleton a 26-0 halftime lead.
Mapleton had 20 first downs and 276 rushing yards. The Mounties also threw for 182 yards.
Travis Pickering led the way for Mapleton with 221 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns.
He scored his first touchdown on a 21-yard run at the 3:26 mark in the first quarter.
The last two sealed the game for the Mounties. Pickering scored from 1-yard out early in the fourth and again from 29-yards with 4:48 left.
The Mounties scored 19 points in the second quarter on three touchdown passes.
Barone had TD passes of 4, 32 and 17 yards.
Corey Kowatch had six receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Zack Mellott scored the Tigers’ touchdown on a 83-yard run with less than a minute left.
Mellott, a senior, had 158 yards on 15 carries in his last game.
The Tigers had 284 rushing yards on 25 carries but managed 47 yards through the air. They also only made eight first downs.
The Tigers fumbled the ball three times and lost one of them.
The Tigers finish the season 7-4 and 5-2 in the Inter-Tri County League (Tier Two).
The Mounties move to 8-3 and play St. Paul next week. St. Paul defeated Mathews 63-2 to advance.
