Ursuline 13, Walsh Jesuit 9

STOW

Ursuline twice came from behind to post a significant early-season road victory in the battle between traditional parochial powers. Trailing 3-0 early in the second quarter, the Irish went ahead on a 13-yard run by Kimauni Johnson. Walsh scored later in the quarter and held a 9-7 halftime lead. Vito Penza then scored from a yard out with just over a minute left in the third quarter for the decisive touchdown and the Irish defense took over from there.

South Range 41, Warren JFK 21

NORTH LIMA

Joe Alessi ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries as the Raiders extended their regular-season winning streak to 11 games. Alessi scored on runs of 10, 2, 1 and 11 yards and David McCabe ran 26 yards for a score for South Range, which visits Campbell on Friday in Week 2. Ryan Miller threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Greg Dunham for the Raiders’ other score. Jonah Wilson made six of seven PAT kicks. Dante Munno ran 57 yards for a touchdown for Warren JFK, which lost in Jeff Bayuk’s coaching debut with the Eagles. Jacob Coates returned a kickoff 93 yards for a TD and Michael Roscoe ran 15 yards for a score for Warren JFK, which hosts LaBrae on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Warren’s Mollenkopf Stadium.

Springfield 35, Brookfield 14

NEW MIDDLETOWN

Quarterback Graham Mincher ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Tigers outscored Brookfield. Mincher’s TD runs were 55 yards and 18 yards and he connected with Ryan Kohler on a 44-yard scoring pass. Mincher finished with 99 rushing yards and Kohler added 89. Nate Morrison ran for two touchdowns and 130 yards for Brookfield. Augustus Necastro passed for 158 yards for the Warriors. Brian Hiner caught six passes for 63 yards and Caleb Hunkus had four catches for 53.

McDonald 59, East Palestine 20

EAST PALESTINE

Jake Reckard ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns and the passing combination of Ben Carkido to Zack Conley clicked for two more scores for the Blue Devils. Nick Monteleone stood out for the Bulldogs with three touchdowns of his own and 100 rushing yards. He helped East Palestine close a 35-8 deficit to 35-20 at halftime. McDonald’s defense then blanked the Bulldogs in the second half and Cameron Ifft and Caleb Dimery added 104 and 100 yards, respectively, on the ground.

Howland 35, Akron Kenmore 6

HOWLAND

The Tigers got a balanced ground attack with 73 yards from Tyriq Ellis, 71 from Jaquore Marrs and 59 from Victor Williams. Ellis and Williams scored two touchdowns apiece and Marrs added a 43-yard scoring run. Howland’s defense held the Cardinals off the board until late in the fourth quarter.

Crestview 14, Beaver Local 7

LISBON

Rebels quarterback Jesse Best scored a 2-yard touchdown with 3:27 remaining for the winning points. Best also scored the Rebels’ other touchdown on a 53-yard run. He rushed 10 times for 111 yards. Cody Riddle caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Trevore McLaughlin for the Beavers’ score. McLaughlin completed 9 of 24 passes for 149 yards. Robbie Johnston rushed for 78 yards on 25 carries.

United 26, Malvern 13

HANOVERTON

Cody Antrum scored two touchdowns to lead the Eagles. His scores covered 1 and 11 yards. Quarterback Cody Dickens (7 yards) and Tyler Powers (31 yards) had the other touchdowns.

Mathews 48, Ashtabula St. John 0

VIENNA

The Mustangs ran for 381 yards and seven touchdowns in a season-opening rout of the Heralds. Mathews broke three big plays in the first quarter. Brian Leipply ran for a 63-yard TD, Cobie Pratt then had a 57-yard scoring run and Justin Marshall ran 65 yards for a TD. Cory Taylor ran for TDs of 2 and 41 yards for Mathews, which also got a 17-yard TD from Noah Shreves and a 35-yarder from Daniel Canter. Center led Mathews with 89 yards on eight carries. The Mustangs held St. John to just two total yards.

Crestwood 49, West Branch 26

BELOIT

The Warriors were dissected by Crestwood quarterback Gabe Surgeon, who passed for 270 yards and four touchdowns, completing 13 of 16 attempts. He also ran for 125 yards and another score. West Branch got a 179-yard passing performance from Corey Snyder, including seven catches for 114 yards by Kip DeShields. Rob Lozier had a 55-yard scoring run.

Streetsboro 40, Champion 7

STREETSBORO

Mason Brown had 20 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown for Champion. Brandon Allen had 46 passing yards and Jerry Sabo had 27 receiving yards for the Golden Flashes. Jerry Judd had 149 yards and three touchdowns passing for Streetsboro.

Jackson-Milton 39, Southington 0

SOUTHINGTON

Jackson-Milton jumped out to an early first-quarter lead and never looked back in its season-opening win ove Southington. Quarterback Mike Assion threw for 132 on 11 of 15 passes and a score. Joe Burnside ran for 152 yards on 11 carries for the Blue Jays. Southington finished with -3 rushing yards and lost three fumbles. Jackson-Milton’s Adam Smith led all receivers with 7 catches for 91 yards.

Newton Falls 27, Rootstown 20

ROOTSTOWN

Brad Mitchell ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 43 yards and another score as the Tigers beat the Rovers in the season opener for both teams. Mitchell’s TD runs covered 18 and 10 yards and his scoring reception — from quarterback Josh Walters — covered 30 yards. Walters completed 7 of 10 passes for 124 yards. Rootstown quarterback Sam Todd ran for 135 yards and a TD and passed for 141 yards and another score. Todd threw a 64-yard TD pass to Caleb Kaut and ran for a 9-yard TD to compete the scoring with 3:36 to play. Chad McGaha scored the Rovers’ other TD on a 2-yard run.

LaBrae 31, Youngstown Christian 0

LEAVITTSBURG

LaBrae scored 25 points in the first quarter and shut out the Youngstown Christian Eagles Friday night. Chris Mathews had nine rushes for 98 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings. Justin Jenkins ran for 77 yards and one touchdown. Jenkins passed for another. For Youngstown Christian, Ryan Houston had 80 yards passing.
