After the Brookfield High football team allowed two scores on Saturday against Warren JFK, the Warriors turned things around.

Trailing by seven points at halftime, the Warriors surged in the final 24 minutes.

Brookfield’s defense sacked Eagles quarterback Michael Roscoe eight times — including four by Jamar Tarver — and rallied for a 28-14 victory.

Brookfield coach Randy Clark said the turnaround was just a matter of his defense doing what it was coached to do.

“We just didn’t block and hit the holes in the first half,” Clark said. “If we do what we’re supposed to do, there’s going to be holes there. That’s what we did the second half.

“We made adjustment to stay in our lanes because we knew [Roscoe] was a great runner and he gets around. When you get to him you’ve got to get him to the ground.”

Clark added that Tarver was given the freedom to run wild on defense.

“We gave Jamar Tarver a little bit more leeway to pin his ears back and go after [Roscoe],” Clark said. “Jamar can probably run with any athlete around here. He’s something special, a first-year player.”

Warren JFK coach Dave Pappada said he tried some adjustments to combat Brookfield’s defense to no avail.

“The second half, we did a poor job containing their pressure defensively and we had bad field position and they reared their ears back and came and got us,” Pappada said. “Got to give them credit as well.

“We saw they were pretty good defensively and we were concerned about that pressure. We emptied the backfield most of the night and tried to get the ball to our speed guys.”

After Tarver sacked and forced Roscoe to fumble that was recovered by Tom Hutchison on Warren JFK’s initial third-quarter possession, Brookfield (4-1) took over at the Warren JFK 39. Joey Clark finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown to tie the game.

After Warren JFK (1-4) went three and our on its next possession, Brian Hiner returned a punt 31 yards to the Eagles’ 12, Clark had his second score of the game from 9 yards out to give the Warriors a 21-14 lead with 4:20 left in the third quarter.

Clark finished the game with 170 yards rushing on 36 carries.

Roscoe made two big plays for Warren JFK’s scores, running 78 yards in the first quarter and connecting with Chad Zallow for a 75-yard score in the second.

Brookfield put the game away in the fourth quarter as Kasey Tingler caught his second TD pass of the game from Augustus Necastro, a 13-yarder with 6:17 to play.
