Randy Clark’s Brookfield Warriors have started the 2013 season with a 3-0 record after an undefeated regular season in 2012. Combined with four straight wins at the end of the 2011 regular season, Brookfield has a 16-game regular season winning streak.

The Warriors graduated a strong senior class that posted a 19-1 regular season mark over the past two years but they are not looking to the past.

Q. Do you and the other coaches talk to the kids about the winning streak, or do the kids talk about it among themselves?

A. We don’t talk about the streak although one of the coaches said this week in practice that our home winning streak is four or five years old, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 games or so. We usually don’t talk about it. The kids don’t dwell on the past, they just go one game at a time.

Q. What about the loss of such a great senior class. How have the players adjusted to not having those players around?

A. Our kids have been kind of excited actually. We’ve some kids who have been here a couple years and haven’t seen the field. They knew they would get some playing time this year. The group ahead of them set the standards high and that makes it easier to coach, these kids know what they have to do. Also, last year we had a great senior class but these kids practiced against them every day for 13 weeks. The kids are tired of hearing about last year, they get it at school, in the community. They come and they go, that was a great class but we’ve got to move forward.

Q. How has the progress of this group been through the preseason and the early weeks of the season?

A. We knew we had some good talent, we knew we had some good kids who could step in but we didn’t know how quick they would be game-ready. Our first scrimmage wasn’t bad but our second scrimmage wasn’t so good. The last two or three weeks we’ve been getting better. I think the more games we play the better we should get.

Q. What are some of your pleasant surprises?

A. Our quarterback, sophomore Augustus Necastro, has really stepped up. He’s put in a lot of time and work and he’s given us a little more than we expected. Our defense has been playing pretty well while our offense has been sputtering.

Q. What about your opponent this week, Struthers?

A. Struthers is a very good team, they are well-coached and they’ve got some good-looking kids. They play smash-mouth football and they’ve probably had this one marked on their schedule since last year when we beat them (26-13) at their place. It’s going to be a tough game, maybe the toughest we’ve had in the last two or three years. They are very well-coached and a very athletic team.
