Puskas: Don’t want to lose 91-0? Get better
They say everything in Texas is bigger and that apparently includes overly sensitive egos.
A week ago tonight, Aledo beat Fort Worth Western Hills, 91-0. Yes, the score jumps off the page. The numbers suggest it is one of the most lopsided matchups you’ll ever see in high school football in Texas or anywhere else.
By most accounts, that is true.
But according to sources on both sides and reporters who were there, Aledo coach Tim Buchanan and his staff did all they could to prevent the game from really getting out of hand.
It could have been worse.
Much worse.
Buchanan pulled Aledo’s starters after 21 snaps. The Bearcats ran just 32 offensive plays and rushed for 391 yards and eight touchdowns. Aledo scored on two pass plays, but threw the ball just 10 times in the game — none in the second half. The Bearcats also scored twice on punt returns and once on a fumble recovery.
In addition to benching starters, Buchanan also reportedly had his punt returners call for fair catches and asked that a continuous clock be employed for the second half.
In other words, Aledo all but won mercifully despite the one-sided final score.
So imagine Buchanan’s surprise when he received an email notification the next day that a Western Hills parent — the father of a player — had accused the Aledo coaching staff of “bullying” using an online form provided by the district.
The Western Hills parent complimented Aledo’s players for their sportsmanship, complained that Buchanan should have done more to prevent the lopsided score. The complaint suggested he and his staff “should have made their players ease up and quit playing that hard.”
Are you serious?
Never mind that the Aledo coach took multiple measures to avoid trying to embarrass the Western Hills players.
Never mind that Western Hills coach John Naylor told reporters that Aledo had not run it up on his team.
Never mind that the district’s online mechanism exists for parents and witnesses of bullying to report — wait for it — actual incidents of bullying.
What was Buchanan supposed to do — have his backups all take a knee on every play in the second half?
Thankfully, the Aledo school district’s mandated probe of the allegation found “no grounds” to support the complaint.
The parent who made the complaint should face some type of penalty, because his frivolous accusation wasted everyone’s time and — more importantly — trivialized real bullying.
It’s tantamount to calling 911 because McDonald’s is out of Chicken McNuggets.
