South Range, W. Reserve top their regions

Staff report

Ten Mahoning Valley high school football teams are in good positions to earn home playoff games.

Undefeated South Range and Western Reserve are in the top spots in their regions, according to the playoff computer ratings released on Tuesday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

South Range (8-0) is atop the Division VI Region 19 standings. Also in that region are Brookfield (6-2) at number five and McDonald (6-2) at number six.

In Division VII Region 23, Western Reserve (8-0) is two spots ahead of Wellsville (7-1). Also in that region are Lowellville (5-3) at number six and Southington (5-3) at number seven.

The top eight teams in each region qualify for the playoffs. The top four seeds host the first-round games. Two weeks remain in the regular season,

In Division I, Austintown Fitch (8-0) is second in Region 1.

Hubbard (8-0) and Poland (7-1) are second and third in Division III Region 7.

In Division IV Region 11, Cardinal Mooney (5-3) has climbed into the number three spot. Struthers (6-2) is fourth.

In Division V Region 15, Ursuline (4-3) is third. Right behind the Irish is Crestview (7-1). In seventh place is Liberty (6-2).

Several teams are on the outside looking in. In Division III Region 7, Howland (4-4) is in 11th place. In Division IV Region 11, Lakeview (5-3) is 10th.

In Division VI Region 19, Springfield (6-2) is ninth while in Division VII Region 23, Mineral Ridge (4-4) is 10th.

Two big games this weekend will shake up the ratings. Springfield travels to South Range and an upset would do wonders for the Tigers’ postseason hopes.

Ursuline and Mooney play, with the Cardinals feeling the pressure. In Week 10, Mooney closes against Fitch.
