Fitch, Reserve finish 2nd in poll

Staff report

Led by a pair of second-ranked teams, the Mahoning Valley placed seven teams on the final Associated Press football poll.

Austintown Fitch (10-0) finished second in Division I behind Cincinnati Colerain (10-0), with the Falcons picking up three first-place votes. Colerain had 19 first-place votes.

The Falcons, who finished unbeaten for the first time, have never won an AP poll title.

In Division III, Hubbard (10-0) finished third behind defending state champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (10-0) and Toledo Central Catholic (10-0). Poland (9-1) was eighth. The Bulldogs’ lone loss came to Hubbard in overtime two weeks ago.

Crestview (9-1) finished 13th in Division V. The Rebels’ lone loss came to unbeaten South Range (10-0), which finished third in Division VI behind two unbeaten teams: Kirtland and Lucasville Valley. The Raiders won a Division V poll title in 2006.

In Division VII, Western Reserve (10-0) finished second behind Ohio powerhouse Maria Stein Marion Local (10-0). The Blue Devils won the poll title two years ago.

Wellsville (8-2) finished 13th in Division VII.

Through the 2012 playoffs, 57 of the 194 AP poll champions have gone on to also win the state playoff title, including three last season.

The Mahoning Valley has 16 teams in the state playoffs — including the seven ranked teams.
