CAMPBELL

Through their first four games of the season, the LaBrae Vikings and Campbell Memorial both had a hard time keeping opponents out of their respective end zones.

For all but 44 seconds of the opening half Friday night, it didn’t look like either team’s offense would score.

Brandon Reyes and Adrien Brown each scored after intermission and the Red Devils’ defense forced five turnovers as Campbell stopped LaBrae, 14-11, in an All-American Conference National Division game.

“It’s nice to win back-to-back games, but even nicer to finally be back on your own turf after starting the season by playing three of our first four games on the road,” Red Devils coach Mickey Sikora said. “We had several players battling the flu all week but we battled the entire game, hung in there despite turnovers and were able to hang on for the win.”

After a scoreless first quarter, it looked as if it would be a scoreless first half until the final minute of the second period.

That’s when the Vikings’ Ian Simmons nailed a 41-yard field goal with just 44 seconds remaining to give LaBrae (0-5, 0-3) a 3-0 lead.

Despite their lead, the Vikings were held to just 18 yards rushing on seven carries and 64 yards total on 25 plays by the stingy Campbell Memorial (3-2, 2-0) defense.

“We made a lot of mistakes tonight but most of all, you cannot give the ball up five times and expect to beat a good team like Campbell Memorial,” Vikings coach Bill Bohren said. “We’ve played hard every game but cannot seem to get over the hump. We just have nothing to show for our effort.”

Reyes (10 of 13, 69 yards) got the Red Devils on the board with his legs on a 1-yard run for a 7-3 lead four minutes into the second half.

“Our defense was able to pick up our offense by forcing some key turnovers, which got the ball back into our hands,” Reyes said.

Campbell’s Motrel Hughes then picked off Peyton Aldridge right before the end of the third quarter, which set up Brown’s 4-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 14-3 lead.

“It’s a lot easier to play when you have the lead. At the half, the coaching staff just said to keep running hard and that is exactly what I did,” said Brown, who rushed for 112 yards on 23 carries.

Aldridge hit Carl Brown with a 16-yard TD strike with 8:12 to play and he hit Chris Mathews for a two-point conversion
