Quarterback Matt Futkos threw touchdown passes to three different receivers as the Austintown Fitch High football team pounded Akron Hoban. Futkos also ran for another score as the Falcons improved to 2-0. The Falcons put the game away with a 21-0 third quarter. Futkos finished 13-for-16 for 185 yards. Tyreese Anderson ran for 120 yards for the Falcons on nine carries and also scored a touchdown.
Ursuline 62, East Tech 6
YOUNGSTOWN
Chris Durkin passed for three touchdowns and Jermaine Williams and Tramain Thigpen ran for two TDs apiece. Ursuline (2-0) scored six times before East Tech (0-2) got on the board with 6:55 remaining in the second quarter. Shannon Hightower, Shawn Cole and Sean Allen were on the receiving end of the TD passes by Durkin, who was 5 of 9 for 186 yards. Durkin, a junior, threw one interception. Damon Green and Kumani Johnson also reached the end zone for the Irish. Williams ran five times for 68 yards while Kumani Johnson’s two rushes totaled 58 yards. Junior Vince Yurcho nailed eight PATs. It was Ursuline’s second straight game at Rayen. In its 41-24 victory over East last week, Ursuline started slowly with two touchdowns called back in the first quarter before the Irish stabilized. “We need to get moving in the first quarter a lot quicker and not put ourselves in bad positions,” first-year coach Larry Kempe said of his team’s play in the opener. “Last week, we turned the ball over early, then got down to business and started moving the ball like we’re capable of moving and took advantage of some of their turnovers.”
Champion 52, Conneaut 6
CONNEAUT
Mike Cyrus scored three touchdowns to lead the Golden Flashes (1-1). His scores came on runs covering 63, 26 and 61 yards. Cyrus rushed five times for 151 yards. Also scoring touchdowns for Champion were Jacob Rasey, Jason Cyrus, Bailey Slyk, Joe Batcho and Troy Colucci. The Flashes limited the Spartans (0-2) to 84 yards rushing and 87 passing.
Warren JFK 31, LaBrae 24
WARREN
Alec Rossi’s 13-yard touchdown run with 49 seconds to play gave Warren JFK a victory. The Eagles used a big second half for a come-from-behind victory for the second straight week. Alex Rossi ran for two second-half touchdowns and Dominic Naples ran for a score and passed for another after intermission as Warren JFK overcame a 14-3 halftime deficit and beat the Vikings at Mollenkopf Stadium. Rossi finished with 132 yards on 14 carries and Naples was 12 of 16 for 178 yards. Rob Seger caught six passes for 92 yards, including a 37-yard scoring pass from Naples. Seger’s catch gave the Eagles (2-0) a 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, but LaBrae (0-2) tied it at 24 on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Aldridge to Carl Brown. Aldridge was 15 of 33 for 262 yards and three TDs, including two scoring connections with Marcel Richardson. Brown caught six passes for 171 yards.
Crestview 31, Beaver Local 6
LISBON
Colin Gilbert threw two touchdown passes to Dimitri Gregory. Nick Blower had 147 yards on 18 carries and also ran for a TD for Crestview, which had 461 total yards. Gregory’s four catches netted 47 yards, while Matt Hardenbrook gained 53 yards rushing and 30 receiving. The Rebels were also tagged with 12 penalties for 105 yards. Trevel Thompkins scored Beaver Local’s touchdown and he registered 104 yards on eight carries.
United 35, Salem 27
HANOVERTON
The Golden Eagles’ Garrett Beech ran for touchdowns of 95, 92 and 5 yards and the quarterback also threw a 3-yard TD pass to Austin Graham. Beech ran 17 times for 285 yards. United rolled up 521 total yards and held a 31:24-16:36 advantage in time of possession. Beech completed 13 of 23 passes for 112 yards with one interception. Mike Martin ran 30 times for 110 yards. Salem’s Trace Jenkins also ran for three touchdowns and connected with Haeden Panezott for a 40-yard tally for the Quakers, who tied United at 7-7, then fell behind and pulled within one point twice thereafter, but never led. Jenkins finished with 16 rushes for 79 yards, while Marcus Crittenden gained 59 on 11 carries for Salem, which had 298 total yards.
McDonald 53, Kennedy Catholic 20
McDONALD
P.J. Mansky rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns, including a 50-yarder, and the Blue Devils finished with 359 yards on the ground in a rout of the Golden Eagles. Jake Reckard scored two touchdowns for McDonald (2-0), one on a 90-yard kickoff return and another on a 1-yard run. The game was the first of the season for Kennedy Catholic.
Leetonia 23, Mineral Ridge 19
MINERAL RIDGE
Leetonia (1-1) built a 21-0 halftime lead and held off a Mineral Ridge rally in a game pitting contrasting offenses. The Bears ran for 153 yards and passed for just 13, while the Rams passed for 169 yards and ran for 34. Zach Van Giesen gained 85 yards on the ground for Leetonia and scored twice. Quarterback John Baker completed 13 of 26 attempts with a touchdown and tacked on two short scoring runs. Casey Porter had six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown for Ridge ( 0-2).
Malvern 20, Western Reserve 3
BERLIN CENTER
Cobin Plessinger rushed 33 times for 189 yards and a touchdown and Malvern got a little bit of revenge for last year’s regional semifinal loss to Western Reserve. Max Karpon gained 75 yards on six carries Brady Webber added 64 yards rushing and a TD for the Hornets (2-0). Dan Rosati led Reserve (0-2) with four catches for 96 yards and Nick Allison threw for 170 yards.
Berkshire 33, Lowellville 10
BURTON
Lowellville was unable to convert early chances in dropping to 0-2. An early touchdown was called back for a holding penalty and the Rockets settled for a 31-yard field goal by Jake Maszczak to open the scoring. Lowellville recovered a Berkshire fumble on the ensuing kickoff but could not score. The Rockets also saw Geno Moore return a second-quarter interception to the Berkshire 8 only to have a clipping penalty move the ball back. Berkshire (2-0) built a 19-7 halftime lead and extended the advantage to 26-7 before Lowellville’s Seth Stevens tallied from 13 yards out early in the fourth quarter. Stevens finished with 83 yards rushing for the Rockets on 20 attempts.
Southington 8, Sebring 0
WINDHAM
Southington scored from 2 yards out with two minutes remaining to cap a 50-yard drive that began when the Wildcats intercepted in a game at Windham High School. Southington (1-1) had 134 of its 143 total yards on the ground. Before halftime, Sebring (0-2) reached Southington’s 1-yard line but fumbled away. Sebring’s Jerry Billingsly, a junior, and sophomore Cody Dennis both had an interception. Sebring senior quarterback Josh Hurford was 10 of 19 for 145 yards with junior Dylan Mick’s four catches netting 62 yards.
Windham 32, Mathews 7
VIENNA
Windham took a 13-0 halftime lead, then increased its lead to 20-0 before junior running back Austin Arnal scored Mathews’ lone touchdown from 1-yard out with 7 minutes remaining. Arnal’s tally followed a 70-yard run from scrimmage for the back, who rushed 18 times for 123 yards. The Mustangs (0-2) suffered five turnovers: four lost fumbles and an interception.
New Philadelphia 49, West Branch 45
BELOIT
West Branch overcame a 28-3 second-quarter deficit to take a 45-42 lead with five minutes left in the game, but surrendered a late touchdown and fell to 0-2. The Warriors had no answer for the Quakers’ Jamal Johnson who ran for 324 yards on 33 carries and caught three passes for anothyer 124 yards. He ran for four touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass. Quarterback Troy James did his best to match Johnson, gaining 192 yards on 35 carries and completing seven of 12 passes for 68 yards. He threw for one score and ran for four others. Logan Nagy ran 22 times for 76 yards and a TD and Kenny Faulkner made four catches for 33 yards and a score.
