BOARDMAN

Eric Glover-Williams rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two more scores to lead the Canton McKinley Bulldogs over the Boardman Spartans, 53-14, in Federal League action Friday at Spartan Stadium.

Glover-Williams, who added 191 rushing yards and had 271 of his team’s 357-yard output, helped give the Bulldogs to the outright league title under first-year head coach Todd Filtz.

“You have to give my hogs up front all of the credit,” Glover-Williams said. “They made all of the right blocks, had all the right reads and opened quite a few holes that made it easy for me to run through tonight.”

After a scoreless opening period, Jeff Richardson got the Bulldogs on the board first when Glover-Williams hit him with a 12-yard scoring strike just eight seconds into the second frame.

It was the first of five scores in the period for the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1).

A 16-yard run by Glover-Williams and a 4-yard dash by Jarrod Smith at the 3:47 mark then extended the Canton McKinley lead to 19-0.

When Troy Lowe added a 4-yard run on a dropped Boardman punt attempt, the Bulldogs built a 25-0 cushion and after Glover-Williams hit Richardson with a 37-yard strike, his second TD reception of the game, Canton McKinley had built a 32-0 cushion heading to the locker room.

“It’s a nice feeling to now be able to cross off one of our goals with this win,” Filtz said. “I cannot say enough about Eric. He’s a sophomore who just keeps getting better each and every game that he plays.”

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 39-0 when Glover-Williams added his second rushing touchdown, this time from 15 yards.

The score came barely two minutes after the intermission.

Boardman (4-5, 2-3) finally got on the board when John Babos scored on a 6-yard run to make it 39-7.

Glover-Williams ran 58 yards for his third TD on the ground to make it 46-7 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 53-7 midway through the final frame when Tre-Vonte Jackson raced 40-yards with an interception return.

Boardman’s Turel Thompson then raced 69-yards at the 4:20 mark to round out the scoring.

“Canton McKinley is an excellent team; a well-coached team with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball,” Spartans coach Mark D’Eramo said.

“There’s a reason that they stand atop the Federal League standings,” he added

The win was the ninth straight victory by the Bulldogs over the Spartans since Boardman joined the Federal League in 2002.

Boardman had 237 offensive yards. Thompson gained a team-high 92 yards on seven carries.
