The Windham Bombers spoiled Jackson-Milton’s home opener Friday night with a dominant 32-20 win in front of a big crowd.

It was the Bombers’ first victory since a 14-11 win over Fairport on Sept. 10, 2010. Windham had lost 17 straight games since.

“Winning the first game here at Jackson-Milton is really good, it’s a great way to start off the season,” the Bombers’ Parker Rickey said.

Windham (1-0) flexed its offensive muscle early on as quarterback Matt Knight pulled a rabbit out of his helmet late in the first quarter.

As a Blue Jays defender was trying to bring him down, he threw up a prayer to Rickey, who caught the pass and ran it in for a 6-yard touchdown.

“That was the luckiest play I ever had,” Knight said. “My center stepped on my foot, so I was falling down and just threw the ball to try and throw it away, but luckily Parker was there to grab it.”

This wasn’t the last time the Blue Jays (0-1) would hear from Knight and Rickey.

Rickey struck again just 90 seconds later, this time on a punt that he returned 65 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead.

“There was nice blocking on the return, everybody was blocking somebody and I only had to beat one person and I did,” Rickey said. “I have to give all the credit to my blockers.”

J-M fought back in the second quarter.

Its no-huddle, spread offense caught the Bombers off-guard and produced a Jeremy Fitzpatrick-to-Chuckie Anderson touchdown connection.

“We tried to catch them off-guard with some no-huddle stuff to see if we could compete, “ Blue Jays coach Mark Assion said. “The offense is an experiment and we are going to keep working with it and we are very proud about how hard our boys played tonight.”

After Windham answered with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Joe Miranda, the Blue Jays once again struck quickly.

Fitzpatrick showed off his rocket arm with a touchdown pass to Thomas Gatewood to cut the deficit to five.

J-M’s momentum was sucked away in the third quarter when Knight pulled off his best Barry Sanders impression by running left, switching directions and outrunning the defense on his way to a 26-yard score.

Windham put the game away when running back Dillon Blewitt ran for a TD and a 32-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Shaffer’s 1-yard TD capped a long, late drive for the Blue Jays.
