Liberty downs Salem; Lakeview triumphs

LIBERTY

Sherron Walls scored twice, including an 11-yard run with 1:24 remaining, to pull the Liberty High football team over Salem, 21-17, on Friday.

It was Liberty’s first victory since the 2010 season.

Liberty amassed 330 yards on the ground with Walls picking up 229 on 33 carries.

Also picking up yardage for the Leopards was John Helms with 59 on four attempts.

Salem had gone ahead, 17-14, with 5:42 remaining when quarterback Trace Jenkins found Brendan Webb on a 3-yard TD pass, followed by Keaton O’Brien’s PAT.

Jenkins also threw a touchdown pass to Jake Carner and Jenkins and finished 15 of 26 for 242 yards. Jenkins’ top receivers were Marcus Crittenden (6-90), Brendan Webb (6-87) and Jake Carner (2-58).

Lakeview 26, Madison 23

Playing for the first time in four years without quarterback Anthony Franco, Lakeview put together a potent ground attack, gaining 278 rushing yards on 51 attempts.

Michael Mannella ran 22 times for 111 yards and Elijah Henderson added 103 yards on nine carries. Henderson also caught five passes for 21 yards as quarterback Erich Schmidt was 5-for-18 passing on the night.

The Bulldogs (1-0) bounced back from a 9-0 deficit and took the lead, 13-9, in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Schmidt. Henderson twice extended the Lakeview lead to 10, 19-9 on a third-quarter touchdown run of 4 yards, and 26-16 with 5:25 left in the game on an 11-yard pass from Schmidt.

Madison tallied with 2:02 remaining to pull within three points, but Lakeview was able to run out the clock.

Brookfield 49, Trinity 7

BEDFORD

Jeremy Quinlan and Ryan Mosora both scored twice for Brookfield, which scored 42 points before the Trinity Trojans got on the board in the fourth quarter.

Mosora scored on a 19-yard run and a 30-yard pass from Agustus Necastro, while Quinlan tallied on runs of 1 and 15 yards and also kicked four PATs to account for 16 of the Warriors’ points.

Colin Harkulich, Joe Clark and Nate Morrison had the other TDs for the winners, who had 302 of their 448 total yards via rush.

Trinity was held to 46 total yards.

Streetsboro 23, Champion 3

Champion got on the board first on a 33-yard field goal by John Rable, but it was all downhill from there.

Dorian Williams ran for 201 yards on 26 attempts including three short touchdowns as Streetsboro rolled. The Rockets rolled up 322 yards on the ground against the Flashes (0-1).

Mike Cyrus ran 12 times for 47 yards for Champion and also caught two passes for 26 yards.

Jefferson 21, LaBrae 13

Leavittsburg

Jefferson quarterback Tony Chiacchiero completed 15 of 20 passes to lead Jefferson. Cole Erdel caught six of them for 57 yards.

For the Vikings, quarterback Peyton Aldridge completed 21 of 42 passes for 237 yards. Carl Brown caught eight for 64 yards.

Southern 48, East Palestine 20

EAST PALESTINE

Southern tallied 335 total yards in its blowout win over East Palestine. Mike McKenzie ran seven times for 115 yards and Tim Parrish had nine carries for 32 yards.

Luke Griffith had three touchdown passes and completed 8-of-12 passes for 125 yards.

Andrew Russell replaced him in the third quarter. His only completion was a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Ketchum.

Derek Smith led East Palestine with 115 yards on 21 carries. Luke Cope completed 7-of-15 passes for 84 yards and two interceptions.

The Bulldogs fumbled four times, losing three.

Steve Treadway converted all six of his extra point attempts for the Indians.

Fairport 49, Mineral Ridge 28

Ryan Greenwood scored four touchdowns and Kyle Burchett scored twice on long runs for Fairport Harding.

Burchett carried 12 times for 144 yards, quarterback Nic Paolo was 9 of 18 for 142 yards and Greenwood had six catches for 116 yards.

Ridge lost three fumbles, including one that Fairport recovered for a touchdown.

Mineral Ridge didn’t score until 2:32 before halftime when Nathan Palmer caught a pass from Jon Baker for a 17-yard TD play.

Baker completed 13 of 24 passes for 236 yards, but he was picked off three times.

Palmer caught five passes for 112 yards, while others on the receiving end of Baker’s aerials were Chris DeRando (3-53) and Casey Porter (3-45).

Malvern 34, United 20

MALVERN

Cobin Plessinger scored twice and gained 190 yards on 27 carries for Malvern, which built on a 14-7 halftime lead.

Max Kapron added 72 yards on six carries, while Brady Weber’s 10 attempts netted 38 yards for the winners, who had 322 yards on the ground.

For United, quarterback Garrett Beech threw two TD passes and ran 63 yards for another.

Newbury 28, Mathews 27, OT

VIENNA

Evan Glancy ran for 195 yards and four touchdowns on 35 carries, but the Black Knights stopped the Mustangs on a 2-point conversion in overtime for a season-opening victory at Booster Field.

Glancy ran for scores of 12, 22, 23 and 15 yards. The last touchdown came after a Newbury TD in overtime. Trailing by a point, Mathews went for two and a win, but Newbury’s defense was up to the task.

Kirtland 39, West Branch 7

KIRTLAND

Damon Washington ran 17 times for 178 yards and two TDs to lead Kirtland, which jumped out to a 26-0 lead. The Hornets, who are the defending Division V state champions, rushed for 427 yards.

Brenden Wells led West Branch with 52 yards rushing and also had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
