Staff report

The Girard Indians aren’t just scoring a lot of points on the football field.

The unbeaten Indians (5-0), who are averaging just under 51 points per game, made the biggest move of any area team in this week’s Associated Press high school football poll.

Girard, which visits Hubbard in the weekend’s most anticipated game, moved up from 10th to No. 8 in Div. IV following its 55-14 win over Champion last week.

The Indians are among eight area schools in this week’s poll — five of which are in the top 10.

Western Reserve (5-0) continues to be the area’s highest-ranked team, moving up to No. 2 in Div. VI.

The Blue Devils, who visit Sebring on Friday, trail only No. 1-ranked Ledgemont in the small-school division.

Howland (5-0), which defeated Pittsburgh Carrick 50-0 last Friday, stayed at No. 4 in Div. II, and Canfield (4-1) remained at No. 10.

The Tigers visit Beaver Local on Friday night, while the Cardinals play host to East.

The area’s other highly-ranked team is Cardinal Mooney, which remained at No. 10 in Div. III after its 21-15 win over Red Lion Christian Academy of Delaware. Mooney is idle this week.

Teams that received enough votes to be ranked, but out of the top 10, were all in Div. V — unbeatens Southern and Columbiana are 11th and 14th, respectively, and Crestview (4-1) is No. 17.

Six teams fell out of the poll from last week — Ursuline, Warren JFK, Brookfield, LaBrae, Springfield and Youngstown Christian.
