Big plays on offense ruled the night for the Boardman Spartans in their 35-14 blowout win over the Lake Blue Streaks on Friday night.

The Spartans (2-2, 1-0 Federal League) started things off with a seven-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ryan Pollifrone to 6-foot-6 wide receiver Dayne Hammond.

Boardman then took the momentum for good when running back Devin Campbell busted loose for a 71-yard touchdown run.

“I love getting the team in to it, whenever I can do something big and get my team going and help us gain some momentum it’s great,” said Campbell. “This win is huge for us because it makes us 1-0 in the league and it’s the start of something special for our seniors.”

Campbell clinched the game for the Spartans at the end of the third quarter when he topped his first run, by easily blowing past the Lake defense for a 79-yard touchdown run that gave Boardman a commanding 35-0 lead. Campbell finished the game with 13 carries for 203 yards rushing and the two touchdowns.

Also having a solid game for the Spartans was Pollifrone who threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns, one to Hammond and another to sophomore Ivan Adu Poka.

Boardman head coach Mark D’eramo credited his offense’s great play in the first half to their victory.

“We did a lot of good things out there today, our kids did everything we asked and we executed well in the first half,” said D’Eramo.

“In the second half we came out and fluttered a little bit and made some mistakes because we lost our focus. We need to learn to play 48 minutes in this league,” said D’eramo.

Lake had several chances to swing the momentum throughout the game, but a fumble in the first half, which lead to a Boardman score, and a pass that was intercepted in the end zone by Leslie McIntosh derailed any chances the Blue Streaks had to get back into the game.

The Blue Streaks (0-4, 0-1) put some points on the board late in the fourth quarter when senior running back Jarrod Daugherty punched it in from 2 yards out.

They then recovered an onside kick and with just seconds remaining Josh Peach threw a TD toss to Ethan Dutton.

The Spartans, who have won two in a row, hope to carry their positive play into next week when they travel to Perry.

“It’s always good to start out 1-0 in the league and we have been stressing this to our team all week long,” said D’Eramo. “In fact I think this may be the first time we have beat Lake here on our home field, it’s something we are really proud of.”
