Warren JFK nets league victory

WARREN
Saturday marked Warren JFK’s first game in league play since 1993 when it was a member of the Mahoning Valley Conference.
Back then, Eagles’ WR/DB Andre Jethroe wasn’t even born.
Now, newly christened in the North Coast Conference, Jethroe and his Eagles teammates are geared up for the chase of a conference crown.
They got a foot in the right direction with a 33-24 win over Cleveland Central Catholic under the lights of Mollenkopf Stadium.
“It’s a great thing to be in a conference,” Jethroe said. “We don’t have to worry about just going to the playoffs or states, now we have something else to put under our belts.”
JFK head coach Dave Pappada says the conference title is something his team has looked forward to winning, all summer long.
The North Coast Conference is based primarily in the Cleveland area. Pappada knows this and is proud of what his team did against one of the most talented in the league.
The valiant play of the Eagles’ special teams put them in a position to win the ballgame.
The turning point came at the 7:36 mark in the third quarter when Damon Wheat muffed a Robert Seger punt.
An onslaught of Eagles on coverage recovered the ball on the CCC 12 yard line. That set up a two-play drive that ended in a nine-yard touchdown run by Jethroe.
“He looked like he was shot out of a cannon on that one,” Pappada said.
Jethroe didn’t stop there.
Quarterback Dominic Naples finished the game going 2-for-7 though the air, totaling 71 yards with one interception.
Alex Rossi tallied 63 yards rushing in the game.“
