District roundup: West Branch loses to New Philadelphia; East Liverpool loses to Carrollton

West Branch struggled defensively, giving up almost 400 yards of offense and 314 of it coming on the ground., in a 28-14 loss to New Philadelphia on Friday night.

New Philly’s Jamal Johnson was responsible for a big chunk of that, rushing for 280 yards on 29 carries and got in the end zone twice.

Brenden Wells led the Warriors (0-2) with 78 yards on the ground and scored from 1 yard out in the second quarter.

Troy James added his own touchdown run in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 21-14.

Johnson scored his last touchdown with just under two mintues left in the game to put it out of reach for the Warriors, who visit Streetsboro next Friday.

Carrollton 24, East Liverpool 21

EAST LIVERPOOL

Austin Miller scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with 4:06 remaining to give Carrollton the come-from-behind victory.

Carrollton, which rushed for 302 yards, got a pair of touchdowns from Jake Peterson of 12 and 22 yards. Peterson led all rushers with 160 yards.

Damon Anderson added 135 yards on the ground for the Warriors.

East Liverpool trailed 6-0 in the second quarter before the Potters’ Marky Thompkins scored on a 26-yard run. Kyle mackey kicked the extra point to give East Liverpool the lead.

After a Peterson TD run, Thompkins scored again, from 3 yards, and Mackey’s kick made it 14-13 at halftime.

Mow Mow Thompson gave the Potters a 21-13 lead in the third quarter on a 17-yard run.

But the Warriors closed to 21-16 on a field goal, setting up Miller’s winning touchdown run.

The Potters are 0-2.
