WR still No. 1 in Div. VI

Staff report

This week’s Associated Press high school poll is marked as much by who’s not in it as who received votes.

Western Reserve (9-0), which goes for an unbeaten season on Friday night against old nemesis McDonald, remains the No. 1-ranked team in Division VI.

But only three other teams — Howland, Girard and Youngstown Christian — are in the top 10.

The Tigers (9-0) completed their season with a victory over Liberty last Friday, and stayed at No. 5 in Div. II.

Dropping out of the rankings was Canfield (6-3), which fell to Niles 29-28.

The Cardinals play arch-rival Poland this weekend, with a playoff berth on the line for both teams.

Girard (8-1), which got back on its winning ways with an impressive 50-0 win over LaBrae, moved up one spot, to No. 8, in Div. IV.

The Indians take on old rival Liberty on Friday night in the regular-season finale.

Youngstown Christian (8-1) also moved up one spot, to No. 9 in Div. VI, following its 39-22 win over Farfield Christian.

The Eagles close out their regular season at Newton Falls on Friday night. But YCS has already — unofficially — clinched a postseason berth.

In Div. III, Cardinal Mooney (5-3) fell from No. 7 to No. 14 following its 25-21 loss to Ursuline.

The Cardinals close out their regular season at Lake of the Federal League on Friday.

Also dropping out of the rankings — despite winning — were Brookfield in Div. IV and Campbell Memorial in Div. V.

The poll champions will be announced by The Associated Press next week.
