Football upsets make impact in statewide poll
Staff report
Two of last Friday’s high school football upsets were reflected in the Associated Press state poll released Monday.
Canfield (6-2), which lost 26-17 to Canal Fulton Northwest, fell out of the Top 10 in Division II while Girard (7-1) dropped from fourth to ninth spot in Div. IV after Campbell (6-2) shocked the Indians, 42-35.
Canfield slipped to 12th in the poll of the state’s best teams in each division.
Howland (8-0), which defeated Canfield 30-28 in Week 4, remains fifth in Div. II.
Also in Div. IV, Brookfield (7-1) is 15th after a 35-7 win over Conneaut. The Warriors dropped two spots from last week’s poll.
In Div. VI, unbeaten Western Reserve remains the top team for the second straight week. The Blue Devils (8-0) received 15 first-place votes and can clinch a tie for first place in the Inter Tri-County league Tier Two with a win on Friday against Jackson-Milton.
The Blue Devils have 319 points from the voters, 14 more than Maria Stein Marion Local.
Western Reserve was ranked fifth when the first AP poll came out in mid-September. The Blue Devils were ranked second for two consecutive weeks before climbing to the top spot.
Joining the Blue Devils in the Div. VI poll is Youngstown Christian, which moved up to the No. 10 spot after the Eagles’ 24-13 victory over Sandy Valley. Last week, Youngstown Christian was 12th.
Campbell’s big win lifted the Red Devils to 15 in the Div. V poll.
For the second straight week, Cardinal Mooney (5-2) moved up one spot. Mooney’s 41-21 romp over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary helped the Cardinals move up to seven.
For the third straight week, there were no area teams ranked in Div. I.
The other poll leaders are: Mentor in Div. I, Avon in Div. II, Steubenville in Div. III, Kenton in Div. IV and Lima Central Catholic in Div. V.
