Staff report

The unbeaten Western Reserve football team has moved into the No. 1 spot in this week’s Associated Press high school football poll.

The Blue Devils (7-0), who defeated Southern 48-3 last weekend in a battle of undefeated powerhouses in the Inter Tri-County League, picked up eight first place votes and 274 points to overtake Ledgemont for the top spot in the Division VI poll.

Western Reserve was No. 5 in the first poll of the season on Sept. 12, and has steadily moved up. The Blue Devils were ranked No. 2 each of the last two weeks. They had eight first-place votes to Ledgemont’s 18, but obviously were named on more ballots.

Also making a substantial move upward was Girard (7-0) in Div. IV. The Indians, coming off a 31-6 victory over Niles last weekend, moved up three spots to No. 4 this week.

The Indians were No. 17 in the first poll of the season and have climbed 13 spots since then.

Three other area schools remained in the top 10.

Howland (7-0) dropped from No. 4 to No. 5 in Div. II, despite beating Poland 21-14 in overtime.

The Tigers were joined by Canfield (6-1), which remained at No. 8 in Div. II.

In Div. III, Cardinal Mooney moved up one spot, to No. 8, after defeating Mifflin County (Pa.) 47-7 last weekend.

Two other teams reappeared in the poll but just out of the top 10.

In Div. VI, Youngstown Christian (6-1) received enough votes to be ranked No. 12. The Eagles were No. 20 in the Sept. 19 poll.

Brookfield (6-1) also reappeared in Div. V. The Warriors are ranked No. 13.

The other poll leaders are Cincinnati Moeller in Div. I, Maple Heights in Div. II, Steubenville in Div. III, Kenton in Div. IV and Lima Central Catholic in Div. V.

There were no area teams ranked in Div. I and Div. V for the second consecutive week.
