Canfield, Girard and WR No. 1

Canfield vs. Howland
Staff report
Friday’s showdowns in the Inter Tri-County League won’t just be for first place.
The games between Crestview and Columbiana in Tier One, and Western Reserve and Southern in Tier Two could solidify a first-round home game in the postseason for the winners.
Columbiana (6-0, 3-0) is third in Division V, Region 17, of this week’s OHSAA football computer ratings. Crestview (5-1, 3-0) is sixth in the same region.
Southern (6-0, 3-0) is fourth in Region 17, and Western Reserve (6-0, 3-0) is first in Div. VI, Region 21.
The winners of Friday’s contests will pick up a lot of points.
There’s also an interesting situation in Div. II, Region 5.
Canfield (5-1) is in first place, while Howland (6-0) is in eighth. If those positions held, the Cardinals would play host to the Tigers in a rematch of their Week 4 thrilling game, which was won by Howland 30-28.
Of course, there’s a lot of games still to be played, and the Tigers have games with Poland and Niles the next two weeks, and could solidify their playoff position with victories.
Poland (4-2) is third in Div. III, Region 11, while Mooney (3-2) is No. 8. In Div. III, Region 9, Niles (4-2) is No. 11.
Boardman is in the top 12 for the first time this season. The Spartans (4-2), who visit Jackson on Friday, are No. 11 in Div. I, Region 1. Jackson is No. 3 in Region 2.
Girard (6-0) is also No. 1 again this week, in Div. IV, Region 13. LaBrae is No. 3 in Region 13. Those teams have a showdown looming in Week 9.
Also in Region 13, Brookfield is No. 7.
Other teams high in the ratings this week are:
Springfield (5-1) at No. 7 in Region 17;
Youngstown Christian (5-1), No. 2; Warren JFK (4-2), No. 5, and Mineral Ridge (3-3), No. 11, all in Div. VI, Region 21.
The ratings will determine the 196 playoff teams around the state starting Nov. 4-5. The state finals are scheduled for Dec. 2-3 in Stark County.
