*The expected reorganization of the Youngstown City Schools would result in one high school for athletic purposes; therefore, the enrollments of Chaney and East would be combined.
By Rob Todor
High school football fans in the Mahoning Valley will notice very few changes for teams in the OHSAA computer ratings the next two years.
The biggest change will involve the future of the Youngstown city high school, whatever it’s called, assuming the proposed reorganization goes through as planned.
The OHSAA released the division alignments and region assignments for the 2011 and 2012 seasons on Thursday.
Until the OHSAA is formally notified of the Youngstown reorganization, both Chaney and East will be listed as Division II. Once the reorganization is complete, the single Youngstown high school will be Div. I.
Other than that there are just a few changes.
In Div. III, the Mahoning County schools (Cardinal Mooney, Poland, Struthers and West Branch) have been moved from Region 9 to Region 11, joining Beaver Local, East Liverpool and Salem.
Hubbard and Niles remain in Region 9.
Five schools have changed divisions.
Campbell Memorial, which qualified for the playoffs last season in Div. IV, will be in Div. V the next two seasons.
Columbiana and Southern Local both move up to Div. V.
Also Brookfield moves up to Div. IV from Div. V, and Mineral Ridge moves down from V to VI.
All told, there are three area teams in Div. I, four in Div. II, nine in Div. III, seven in Div. IV, 10 in Div. V and 12 in Div. VI.
