3 Mahoning Valley athletes earn special AP honors

Jesse Curry of Ursuline, Kaevon Green of Youngstown Christian and Jeff Clegg of Western Reserve received special honors on The Associated Press All-Ohio football team on Wednesday.
Curry, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound senior, led the Irish in tackles and is among the school’s all-time leaders in that category. He was named co-Defensive Player of the Year in Division V by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters around the state.
Green, a 6-3, 210 junior who led Youngstown Christian to a 9-1 record and the school’s first berth in the state playoffs, was named co-Defensive Player of the Year in Div. VI.
Also in Div. VI, Clegg (6-1, 182, senior) was named co-Offensive Player of the Year after leading Western Reserve to a perfect 10-0 regular-season, the Associated Press poll championship and three playoff victories.
Six area players were named first team All-Ohio in the two divisions announced on Wednesday, and 39 players received mention.
Joining Curry on the Div. V first team was running back Ja’les Hughes (5-10, 170, senior) of Campbell Memorial.
The other first team selections in Div. VI were Western Reserve running back Donnie Bolton (6-0, 175, senior) and defensive back Anthony Abeid (5-9, 160, senior) of Youngstown Christian.
Four players received second team honors in Div. V — offensive end Jake DiCello of East Palestine (5-8, 155, senior); defensive lineman C.J. Collins (6-4, 210, senior) of Crestview, and Campbell Memorial teammates Shaquon McWilson (6-4, 330, junior), an offensive lineman, and Dewaylan Letlow (6-3, 185, senior), a defensive back.
Third-team honors went to Springfield’s Joe Ohlin (6-1, 160, senior), an offensive end; linebacker Kyle Exline (6-2, 235) of Southern, and Ursuline defensive back Anthony Davis (6-3, 185, senior).
Ursuline’s Khallid Pierce and Sha’Haun Williams were named Special Mention, along with Austin Barbato and Trenton Solmen of Columbiana, Springfield’s Nick Russell, Zack Puckett of Southern, Crestview’s Nick Blower and Alex Dickey of South Range.
In Div. VI, Josh Carter of Wellsville (6-4, 250, senior) was named Second Team as a defensive lineman, while four players received Third Team recognition: Offensive lineman Anthony Harris of Youngstown Christian (5-10, 260, senior); linebacker Thomas Benyo of Western Reserve (6-1, 205, senior), and defensive backs Cody Stokes (6-4, 200, senior) of Leetonia and Dominic Naples (5-10, 155, junior) of Warren JFK.
Special Mention honors went to Robert Seger and Alex Rossi of Warren JFK, R.J. Pacella of Leetonia, McDonald’s Nick Puntel, Tyler Powell of Western Reserve, Jacob Chiclowe and Devine Redding of Mineral Ridge, Brennen Morrison of Jackson-Milton, Dominic Polito of Youngstown Christian, Bryan Schiraldi of Lowellville, Wellsville’s Rick Brightwell and Dakota Wagner of Sebring.
