Boardman can’t hold lead, falls to Bengals

BEDFORD

Toby Laghey’s 90-yard touchdown pass to Marshell Howell and Laghey’s 55-yarder for a Brian Lacey score gave Benedictine an edge in a 31-30 win over Boardman.

Boardman fumbled the opening kickoff, then watched Benedictine put up three points on a Laghey field goal just 1:05 into the game.

Boardman came back, however, and took a 21-3 lead on two touchdowns by Devin Campbell and one by Dayne Hammond. Senior quarterback Ryan Pollifrone threw touchdown passes of 51 yards to Campbell and 8 yards to Hammond. Campbell, a senior halfback, also scored on a 39-yard run.

Benedictine then put up the next 21 points to push ahead, 24-21, heading into the fourth quarter. Campbell’s 13-yard TD run gave Boardman a 28-24 lead until a 28-yard TD run put the Bengals back on top, 31-28, with 9:38 remaining.

Boardman then lost a fumble at Benedictine’s 16.

The Bengals took a safety with 21 seconds remaining to finalize the scoring.

Senior halfback Allen Starkey rushed 15 times for 56 yards for Boardman.

Benedictine’s Laghey, however, completed 18 of 32 passes for 316 yards. One of Laghey’s two interceptions was by Boardman senior linebacker Dan Popio in the second quarter.

Pollifrone completed 13 of 24 for 137 yards and the senior QB had 38 yards on eight carries. Campbell had six catches for 78 yards and Hammond added 54 yards on six receptions.
