Staff report

Austintown Fitch and Boardman’s football teams were the beneficiaries of some important victories last Friday.

The Falcons (5-0), who defeated Canton GlenOak, 43-21, moved up three places to No. 2 in the Division I, Region 1 standings in the OHSAA computer ratings, released on Tuesday.

Boardman (3-2), which knocked off Massillon Perry, 19-13, is No. 6 in Region 1, after not being in the top 12 last week.

Of course, all of this means nothing until the final ratings are released following the final games the weekend of Oct. 29-30.

But this week’s rankings include 19 area schools at the halfway point of the season.

In Div. II, Region 5, Howland (5-0) stayed at No. 3 behind Chesterland West Geauga and Copley, who flip-flopped their spots from last week.

In Div. III, Region 9, Poland, Hubbard, Cardinal Mooney and Southeast are rated 5-8, respectively, in a region that has no unbeaten teams remaining.

Poland also made a big jump, from No. 10 last week, following its 47-7 win over Niles.

The Red Dragons are No. 10 this week after sitting at No. 5 last week.

In Region 11, East Liverpool is No. 4 and Salem is tied for No. 8.

Campbell Memorial (5-0) is No. 4 and Girard (4-1) is No. 8 in Div. IV, Region 13.

In Div. V, Region 17, Ursuline (5-0) is No. 2 behind Kirtland, swapping places with the Hornets after last week’s results.

Crestview is No. 3, South Range is No. 5 and United is No. 9 in Region 17.

In Div. VI, Region 21, Western Reserve moved up one spot after defeating Sebring 28-12, while in Region 23, Southern dropped one spot, to No. 7, and Columbiana improved to No. 9.

The top eight teams in each region advance to the playoffs, with the top four teams earning home games in the first week of the postseason. The state finals are Dec. 3-4 in Stark County.

This week’s computer ratings are on page B3.
