Ursuline ranked No. 1 in Division V

Ursuline High’s football team is an overwhelming choice as the best team in Division V, in the first poll of the 2010 season.
The Fighting Irish (3-0), who are two-time defending state champions, received 20 first-place votes in balloting by sportswriters and broadcasters around the state.
Ursuline, with 240 points, holds a comfortable margin over runner-up Versailles (3-0), with 163 points.
The Fighting Irish, who play host to Bedford on Friday night, were the highest-ranked of Valley teams.
In Div. III, Cardinal Mooney (2-1) was ranked No. 3 with one first-place vote and 169 points, behind No. 1 Steubenville (3-0) with 239 points and No. 2 Columbus Watterson (199).
Columbus DeSales (2-1), which lost to Mooney in last year’s state final, is ranked No. 4 and plays host to the Cardinals on Friday night.
Also in Div. III, Salem (3-0) is tied for eighth in the balloting with 55 points.
The Quakers play at Hubbard on Friday night.
Howland (3-0) is ranked No. 9 in Div. II with one first-place vote and 75 points. The Tigers visit Canfield on Friday night.
Cincinnati Turpin (3-0) leads the balloting with 144 points, followed by Columbus Marion-Franklin, Maple Heights, Mentor Lake Catholic and Toledo Central Catholic.
Other area teams receiving votes in the initial poll were Austintown Fitch in Div. I (18th place), Campbell Memorial in Div. IV (14th), and Western Reserve in Div. VI (16th).
Fitch (3-0) plays host to No. 11 Canton McKinley (2-1) on Friday night in the Falcons’ Federal League opener.
Delphos St. John’s is ranked No. 1 in the small-school division, followed by Maria Stein Marion Local, Newark Catholic, Ada and Dalton.
In Div. I, Cle. Glenville leads the way with 10 first-place votes and 203 points, with Cincinnati Colerain, Lakewood St. Edward, Hilliard Davidson and Cincinnati Moeller rounding out the top five.
