Staff report

Columbus

The hits just keep coming for the Cardinal Mooney High football team.

Not only were the Cardinals (5-3) defeated by archrival Ursuline, but they also were knocked out of the Top 10 in the Associated Press poll of Ohio’s teams.

Mooney received 19 votes, which was good for the No. 12 spot on the Division III list.

The Irish, meanwhile, remain in the top spot for Div. V.

After defeating Mooney 44-7, Ursuline (9-0) received 31 first-place votes. The Irish close the regular season on Thursday against Akron St.Vincent-St. Mary, a team Mooney defeated in Week 8.

Ursuline has guaranteed itself the top seed in the Region 17 playoffs. The two-time defending state champions are looking to become the first Mahoning Valley team to win back-to-back-to-back titles.

Also falling out of the top 10 was Western Reserve (8-1) who also lost to a big rival. McDonald defeated Western Reserve 15-13. Western Reserve received 62 votes in Div. VI to place 11th. McDonald (7-2) received 19 votes for 16th.

Undefeated Howland moved up one spot in Div. II after a shutout victory of Liberty. The 48-0 rout gave the Tigers (9-0) the No. 6 spot with 159 votes.

A loss to Federal League opponent Uniontown Lake, a Div. II team, Div. dropped Austintown Fitch one spot to No. 10 in Div. I. The Falcons (8-1) received 33 votes.

Fitch will play Boardman (6-3) on Friday. If Boardman wins, the Spartans would share the Federal League crown with the Falcons and perhaps Canton McKinley and Lake.

A Fitch win would give the Falcons the conference outright.

Also receiving votes in the poll were: Hubbard (13) in DiV. III and Campbell Memorial (16) in Div. IV.

The Eagles (7-2) finish the regular season at home against Niles while the Red Devils (8-1) will travel to Struthers to close out their 2010 regular season.
