Staff report

The curious case of the Associated Press high school football poll continued on Monday, when Austintown Fitch (8-0) fell a spot, to No. 9, in the Division I rankings despite a 38-point victory.

The poll, of course, has no bearing on the Falcons’ playoff chances, which are almost secured.

Fitch, which travels to Lake for a Federal League game on Friday night, is one of six area schools in the top 10 of the six divisions.

Howland moved up one spot in Div. II, to seventh, following its 27-0 victory over Niles.

The Tigers travel to Liberty (1-7) on Friday night in an All-American Conference non-division game.

In Div. III, Cardinal Mooney defeated Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 23-6 and moved up one spot, to sixth, and East Liverpool moved up from 10th to ninth after defeating Oak Glen (W. Va.) 32-12.

The Cardinals play rival Ursuline on Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium.

East Liverpool plays host to John Marshall of Glen Dale, W. Va., on Friday night.

In Div. IV, Campbell Memorial (7-1) was the highest-ranked team, at No. 15. The Red Devils moved up two places after defeating Girard 31-21.

Campbell Memorial next plays at Newton Falls in an AAC Blue Tier game on Friday night.

In Div. V, unbeaten Ursuline (8-0) maintained a healthy lead over Kirtland. The Fighting Irish, who defeated Steubenville, 24-3, had 28 first-place votes, the most of any team in any division in the poll.

Also in Div. V, Crestview (7-1) stayed at No. 15 after defeating South Range 47-7. The Raiders (6-2), who were No. 16 last week, fell out of the poll.

In Div. VI, Western Reserve (8-0) stayed at No. 8 after defeating Jackson-Milton 35-13.

The Blue Devils play host to McDonald (6-2) in a first-place battle in the Inter Tri-County League Tier Two.

But Southern (7-1) fell out of the poll despite defeating Lowellville 49-8.
