Staff report

That Ursuline vs. Steubenville showdown between two No. 1-ranked teams on Friday night?

Yeah, that lost a little bit of its luster.

The Fighting Irish (7-0) held up their end of the bargain, beating Columbus St. Charles 49-20 to retain their top spot in this week’s Associated Press Division V poll of sportswriters and broadcasters around the state.

Steubenville (6-1), though, lost to Massillon, 28-7, and fell from No. 1 to No. 3 in the Div. III poll.

Friday’s game at Harding Stadium in Steubenville, though, still should have the appeal of a state championship matchup.

Five other Valley teams received enough votes to rank in the top 10s.

In Div. I, Austintown Fitch (7-0) moved up one spot, to eighth, after a 42-12 victory over North Canton Hoover.

Howland stayed at No. 8 in Div. II after a 20-18 win over Poland.

In Div. III, Cardinal Mooney (4-2) moved up two spots, to seventh, after defeating Cleveland Benedictine, 42-7, and East Liverpool (6-1) moved into 10th place.

Western Reserve (7-0) stayed at No. 8 in Div. VI, while Southern (6-1) stayed at No. 16.
