Ja’les Hughes named first team All-Ohio

Ja’les Hughes, who rushed for 1,601 yards and led Campbell Memorial to the All-American Conference Blue Tier championship, was named first team All-Ohio in Division IV on Tuesday.

Hughes, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound junior, was one of eight area players named to the football all-star squad.

Also on Tuesday, the Div. III All-Ohio team was announced, and 13 local players were selected.

Joining Hughes on the Div. IV squad were teammates John Sikora, Richard Bledsoe and David Guidos.

Sikora (5-10, 210), a senior linebacker, and Bledsoe (6-1, 180), a senior defensive back, were both named to the third team, while Guidos (5-11, 255), a senior, was named special mention

Landon Smith (6-0, 180, sr.) of Girard was named to the second team in Div. IV. He caught 37 passes for 928 yards and 12 TDs this season.

Other third-team selections were quarterback Anthony Franco (5-10, 180, jr.) of Lakeview, running back James Rasey (5-7, 185, sr.) of Champion, and linebacker Kyle Richey (6-0, 210, sr.) of Girard.

Leading the Div. III honorees were Darius Patton of Poland, Trent Toothman of Salem, Marky Thompkins of East Liverpool and Blake Novotny of Hubbard. They were all named to the second team.

Patton (5-10, 170, sr.) had 49 catches for 800 yards and 12 TDs for the Bulldogs.

Toothman (6-2, 200, sr.) accounted for 1,293 rushing yards and 1,441 passing yards as the Quakers’ quarterback.

Thompkins was also named at quarterback, while Novotny (6-2, 220, sr.) led the Eagles’ defense.

Named to the third team were Cardinal Mooney teammates Charlie Brown (6-0, 200, sr.) at running back and A.J. Fox (6-2, 200, sr.) at placekicker, and Hubbard defensive back Mike Lopuchovsky (6-1, 190, sr.).

Mike Rossi of Mooney, Mike King of Salem, Ryan Brown of West Branch, and East Liverpool teammates Andrew English, Kody Edwards and Willie Leavell were all named special mention.
