Eighteen minutes into the 2010 football season, the Chaney High football team finally had a moment to celebrate after consecutive sacks of Fitch quarterback Demitrious Davis.

The Cowboys would just as soon forget about everything that happened before Corey Jackson and Jaquez Ezell brought down Davis as Fitch played to near perfection in scoring four first-quarter touchdowns.

An interception returned for a touchdown, a blocked punt and offensive line dominance powered the Falcons to a 58-7 rout of the Cowboys in the final staging (for now and maybe forever) of the “West Side Rivalry.”

Fitch coach Phil Annarella said the Falcons “executed our game plan pretty well and we were pretty consistent.”

The Falcons, preparing for next week’s huge showdown at Poland, seized control immediately, marching 65 yards on six plays for the lead. Chris Davis capped the drive with a 12-yard run 93 seconds into the game.

Less than three minutes later, the score was 22-0. First, the Falcons recovered a fumble at the Chaney 14 to set up Demitrious Davis’ 2-yard score.

Then Will Mahone picked off a tipped pass and returned it 20 yards for the Falcons’ third touchdown in 4:04 of play.

“I thought the tight end was going to catch the ball, but it just happen to drop into my hands,” said Mahone who also returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 84 yards.

Mahone said he enjoyed the interception return more “because it was a close game then.”

Asked how long the Falcons would celebrate before turning their full attention to Poland, Davis said, “Tonight. We start preparing tomorrow.”

Davis, who led the Falcons with 97 yards rushing on 13 carries and passed for 79 more, said the Falcons “need to work on [picking up their] tempo, keeping the ball moving.

“I think we lost a lot of focus coming into the second quarter just because we were winning by so much,” said Davis, who scored two touchdowns and passed for another.

The quarterback said the Falcons are ready to test themselves against the playoff-tested Bulldogs.

“I’ve been waiting for this one all year,” Davis said.

Mahone said it’s not just another non-conference game.

“Oh it’s bigger than that,” Mahone said. “Poland has a good program. [Wide receiver] Darius Patton and quarterback Colin Reardon are back. The [Davis] twins and I have been to camps with them and we are sort of close. It should be a fun time.”

Offensive lineman Steve Zaborsky said he “can’t even explain the excitement I have built up inside me. I am so looking forward to this game.

Zaborsky agreed with Davis that the Falcons need to stay focused with another good week of practice.

“We have to have an even better week and we can’t underestimate them,” said Zaborsky, a Youngstown State recruit. “They have some big guns over there and we just need to be able to match up and make plays.”
