Special to The Vindicator UPPER CRUST: This year’s Johnny Appleseed Festival in Lisbon promises to have appeal for all apple lovers as the third annual pie-baking contest gets under way. Craig Brown, chamber of commerce vice president, left, and Ryan Hillman, chamber president, seem eager for the taste testing to begin. The festival will take place Saturday and Sunday.

LISBON — This year’s Johnny Appleseed Pie Baking Contest is returning for a third consecutive year. Columbiana County Recorder Craig Brown is again sponsoring the bake-off, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

No preregistration is necessary, and contestants may deliver their pies for judging to the Lisbon Chamber of Commerce between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Entries will be accepted in both amateur and professional categories.

Winning amateur bakers will receive a gift certificate from the Steel Trolley Diner, Avalon or Coffee Fusion and Tea Co.

The winning baker in the professional category will be presented with a banner to display in his or her place of business. All winners will receive Johnny Appleseed Festival ribbons.

All pies must be made using apples. Any type of apple pie is acceptable. No pies should contain store-bought crust or canned pie filling. Also, deliver pie in a nonreturnable pie tin labeled on the bottom with the baker’s name and phone number.

Pies will be scored and judged based on texture, appearance and taste.

Bakers and supporters are welcome to observe pie judging. Pies will not be returned.

Slices of pie will be available for sale after judging.
