DISTRICT: Mathews wins; Fitch and West Branch lose


West Branch suffered a 35-10 defeat to Canton South.

MASSILLON — Jackson quarterback Max Paulus and receiver Ramon Brown teamed up twice in the first half to lead the Polar Bears over Austintown Fitch, 19-6, in a Federal League football game Friday night.

Paulus completed 10-of-17 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns, to Brown covering 18 and 20 yards. Those scores gave Jackson (3-3, 1-2 FL) a 13-0 lead.

The Falcons (3-3, 0-3) answered with a 10-yard run by quarterback Jon Ballard, making it 13-6 at halftime.

Steve Gardner of Jackson, who finished with 27 carries for 143 yards, closed the scoring with a 46-run in the fourth quarter.

Ballard finished 14-of-25 for 152 yards and three interceptions. Sylvestri Gibbs rushed for 70 yards on 12 carries.

Canton South 35, West Branch 10

BELOIT — Defense and special teams led Canton South’s victory over West Branch Friday.

Canton was able to hold the Warriors to only 10 points and 247 yards of total offense. Canton’s Jordan Wanner ran an interception back 45 yards at the start of the fourth quarter, and teammate Ryan Jialanella returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a score minutes later.

West Branch’s only points of the night came early. In the first quarter, quarterback Mike Smith connected with receiver Eric Bates on a 5-yard score, and Bo Beegle kicked a 27-yard field goal in the second. Smith finished 20-34 for 162 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Bates had 10 catches for 91 yards.

Mathews 40, Pymatuning Valley 14

VIENNA — The Mustangs (12-4-1-1) put the Eastern Suburban League out of reach with a 13-8 surge in the third quarter.

Bret Jackson rushed for 322 yards on 28 carries, which included TD runs of 1, 37, 1 and 20 yards for Mathews.

Other games

Wheeling Central Catholic defeated Warren JFK, 26-17; East Liverpool defeated Linsly, W. Va., 14-12; Southington defeated Ashtabula Sts. John & Paul, 54-34, and Kent Roosevelt defeated Southeast, 42-0. Details of these games were not reported.
