Boardman, McDonald rise in HS polls
STAFF REPORT
Victories by Boardman and McDonald impressed enough voters in the Associated Press high school football poll to move those teams into the top 10 of their respective divisions in the weekly balloting.
The poll was released Tuesday night, and Poland and Ursuline maintained their No. 1 spots in Divisions III and V, respectively.
Boardman (5-0), which plays at North Canton Hoover (4-1) on Friday, received 52 points to place No. 10 in Div. I, up from one spot last week.
Cincinnati Colerain remains in the top spot in the big-school division, earning 26 first-place votes and 296 points to outdistance No. 2 Cleveland Glenville by 45 points. Pickerington Central is third, Dublin Coffman is fourth and Huber Heights Wayne and Canton GlenOak are tied for fifth.
In Div. VI, McDonald (5-0), which defeated Jackson-Milton 61-30 last weekend, moved up two spots to No. 9 and received a first-place vote.
Bascom Hopewell-Loudon, Mechanicsburg, Delphos St. John’s. Mogadore and Norwalk St. Paul hold down the top five spots.
Western Reserve (No. 12) and Leetonia (No. 15) also received votes in the small-school division.
Poland (5-0) saw its lead over No. 1 St. Mary’s Memorial shrink despite a 36-8 win over Niles. The Bulldogs picked up 20 first-place votes (two fewer than last week), and their advantage dropped from 73 to 55 points.
Liberty (5-0) remains at No. 5 in the Div. III poll and picked up a first-place vote. Thornville Sheridan and Tipp City Tippecanoe remain at No. 3 and 4, respectively.
Ursuline (5-0) picked up four additional first-place votes from last week and extended its lead over new No. 2 Hamler Patrick Henry to 57 points.
St. Henry dropped from second to No. 7 after a 17-10 loss to Maria Stein Marion Local, which moved up one slot to No. 4. Archbold is No. 3 and Findlay Liberty-Benton is No. 5 this week.
South Range received enough votes to be ranked No. 15.
In Div. IV, Mooney (4-1) slipped from a tie for second to third despite beating Mentor Lake Catholic, 35-14.
Coldwater remains No. 1 in the poll, followed by Steubenville, which was tied with Mooney last week. Fostoria and Kettering Alter round out the top five.
No local teams were mentioned in Div. II. Columbus DeSales, Louisville, Toledo Central Catholic, Logan and Cin. Turpin hold down the top five spots, unchanged from last week.
