Niles won its first game: Champion won in five overtimes.

LISBON — Greg Sabol scored two touchdowns Friday to lead the Poland High football team past Beaver Local, 26-8, in an All American Conference Red Division game.

Sabol’s first score came on a 3-yard run. His second touchdown covered 22 yards and put the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0) ahead 20-0 in the third quarter. He rushed 15 times for 98 yards.

Sabol also hit John Price with an 8-yard scoring pass. Gannon Hulea scored Poland’s other touchdown on a 1-yard run.

The Beavers (1-2, 0-1) ended the shutout when Eric Ward tackled Hulea in the end zone for a safety. Shawn Mercer broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Hulea completed 7-of-11 passes for 71 yards. Luke Wollet rushed 10 times for 71 yards. Weston Wagner caught three passes for 40 yards.

Brandon Bussard led the Beavers with 74 yards on 20 carries. Mercer gained 67 yards on nine tries.

Niles 21, Cle. JFK 8

NILES — Josh Knapp rushed for 156 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Red Dragons (1-2) to their first win.

Knapp scored from the 3-yard line late in the first quarter for the game’s first score, then added a 2-yard TD with just under three minutes remaining in the third period to give Niles the lead for good, 13-8.

Zak Stanton closed the scoring with a 2-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, and Nick Liste added three extra points.

Niles held JFK (1-2) to 129 total yards.

West Branch 49, Salem 21

SALEM — Junior running back Mark Smith scored three times and senior slotback Eric Bates twice for West Branch, which gained 433 yards on the ground.

The Warriors (3-0) gained 493 total yards in 40 plays, while Salem needed 75 plays to attain 477.

Quick scores for were the fix for West Branch, with Smith scoring on runs of 51 and 85 yards and Josh Paukner on an 88-yard kickoff return.

Salem was within 28-21, but Smith’s 3-yard run late in the third quarter pushed the Warriors’ lead to a comfortable margin.

Smith finished with 197 yards, while Bates added 171.

Salem (0-3) got 322 yards in the air on 23 of 37 by Trent Toothman. The sophomore quarterback was making his third varsity start. He threw TD passes to seniors Geno Pasquinelli and senior Jordan Strabala.

Lakeview 30, Geneva 14

GENEVA — Ben Moody scored three touchdowns on runs of 29, 29 and 3 yards and rushed for 157 yards in 16 carries to lead Lakeview (3-0).

Te Elias also scored for Lakeview on a 36-yard run and rushed for 51 yards in four attempts, while Joel Davis kicked a 28-yard field goal and three extra points.

Justin Clark completed 6-of -11 passes for 73 yards to aid the Bulldogs.

Geneva (1-2) was led by James Murray with 97 rushing yards in 18 attempts, including a 5-yard TD dash; and Tyler Erb with 5-for-14 passing for 145 yards, including a 15-yard TD strike to Greg Scott. Erb also rushed for 32 yards in six carries.

Champion 27, Conneaut 20, 5 OT

CHAMPION – Fans got their money’s worth out of this game, won by the Golden Flashes on Tommy Stroup’s third touchdown, a 3-yard run.

Stroup finished with 74 yards, while quarterback Shane Brown was 12-of-29 passing for 129 yards and one TD, and he rushed 10 times for 68 yards.

The score was tied at 14 after regulation.

LaBrae 24, Garrettsville 0

GARRETTSVILLE — Cameron Truss rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown to lead the Vikings (2-1).

Jordan Miller added 48 yards and a TD, and he passed 33 yards to Truss for LaBrae’s other touchdown.

Jefferson 29, Brookfield 27, OT

JEFFERSON — With the scored tied 21-21, Johnny Namey scored on a 8-yard run and Josh Simon ran over a two-point conversion to give Jefferson an overtime victory. Matt Palumbo then scored on a 1-yard run for the Warriors (0-3) , but a try to tie it up failed.

Jefferson led 21-7 at intermission, but the Warriors battled back to tie it as Mac O’Brien, who had scored on a 17-run in the second quarter, scored on a 8-yard run in the third period. Palumbo then scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth period to send it into overtime.
